John A. Eisler Named Dean of Springfield College School of Professional and Continuing Studies

John A. Eisler, PhD, has been named the first dean of Springfield College’s School of Professional and Continuing Studies. Formerly known as the School of Human Services, the School of Professional and Continuing Education was renamed in order to allow its 10 regional campuses to expand programming beyond human services, with both on-campus and online degree programs.

Eisler comes from Saratoga Springs, N.Y., where he was associate dean of SUNY Empire State College’s Center for Distance Learning, a center that serves 10,000 adult learners annually. As associate dean at Empire State College, Eisler led its academic support, individualized degree planning and prior learning assessment, advising, and outreach efforts. Eisler also served as associate professor at Empire State and at the University of North Florida. He earned both his doctoral and master’s degrees from Emory University in the field of neuroscience.

“I am passionate about adult education and committed to the success of all learners, and I am thrilled to lead the evolution of the School of Professional and Continuing Studies. We will be offering wider arrays of programs and modes of study that provide broadly accessible and highly relevant education for our students,” Eisler said.

Eisler’s plans for Springfield College School of Professional and Continuing Studies include the expansion of undergraduate and graduate programs by building upon the strengths of its human services programs, as well as the aggressive pursuit of online programs for adults in many subject areas. Eisler will lead the School in forging partnerships with regional and national organizations and in developing degrees, certificates, and continuing education units.

Announcing Eisler’s appointment, Springfield College Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Jean Wyld, PhD, said, “We are delighted to appoint Dr. Eisler the dean of the School of Professional and Continuing Studies. His expertise in online education and program development, combined with his dedication to adult education perfectly complement Springfield College’s strategic goals. John is uniquely qualified to provide leadership to this school, and to be part of the college's expansion of programs for its students.”

The School of Professional and Continuing Studies provides adults with broadly accessible higher education that embodies the principles of community partnership and leadership in service to others. The School’s regional campuses are located in Boston and Springfield, Mass., Manchester, N.H., St. Johnsbury, Vt., Wilmington, Del., Charleston, S.C., Tampa Bay, Fla., Houston, Tex., Milwaukee, Wis., and Tustin, Calif.
