Goal 1 : Sociology majors are expected to understand “the sociological perspective” (i.e., focus on social forces).

  • SLO 1 :  Sociology majors will be able to identify a variety of social forces (e.g., small groups, dominant ideologies).
  • SLO 2 :  Sociology majors will be able to analyze how social forces affect people in society (e.g., how media impact families).

Goal 2 : Sociology majors are expected to understand central concepts utilized in the discipline of sociology.

  • SLO 3 : Sociology majors will be able to give examples of culture (e.g., language, beliefs) and social structure (e.g., organizations, institutions).
  • SLO 4 : Sociology majors will be able to analyze influence(s) that culture and social structure have on people (e.g., how beliefs and organizations associated with the economy impact politics).
  • SLO 5 : Sociology majors will be able to describe evidence of social inequality (e.g., unequal income & wealth, underrepresentation in the media).
  • SLO 6 : Sociology majors will be able to explain causes of social inequality (e.g., prejudice, institutional discrimination).

Goal 3 : Sociology majors are expected to have a basic understanding of sociological research methods.

  • SLO 7 : Sociology majors will be able to describe basic aspects of sociological research methodologies (e.g., surveys, research questions).
  • SLO 8 : Sociology majors will be able to explain sociological research findings (e.g., what does research reveal in regard to explaining why women earn less money than men?).

Goal 4 : Sociology majors are expected to develop skills that enable them to effectively work with people.

  • SLO 9 : Sociology majors will demonstrate professional behavior (e.g., organization, dependability) in their fieldwork placement sites.
  • SLO 10 : Sociology majors will be able to apply what they have learned about people in their fieldwork placement sites (e.g., take diversity into account in their interaction with and service to others).
