Residence Life Programming Associate

Primary Responsibilities:

The Graduate Associate (GA) for Programming reports to the Assistant Director of Housing & Residence Life and they serves as an integral member of the department.  The Graduate Associate assists primarily with the programmatic aspects of the Housing and Residence Life Department, but will also assist with training and other large-scale departmental projects on an as-needed basis.  They must be able to work (20) hours per week in order to assist the Assistant Director on a daily basis while completing the assigned tasks.  This person must be able to work on an independent basis with little supervision at times.  They must also be able to collaborate on projects and tasks with various campus offices and stake holders.  Goals of the Graduate Associate include but are not limited to: Promoting the development of inclusive residential communities where academic endeavors and achievements are valued and student engagement and leadership opportunities abound.

Some tasks and duties include:

  • Assist in daily operations of the Office of Housing and Residence Life related to programming and community engagement.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of a new residential engagement model.
  • Research community engagement and programming best practices of other universities.
  • Hold focus groups and administer surveys to Resident Assistants and resident students regarding programming in the residence halls.
  • Create a standardized program tracking system for all Resident Assistants to use when proposing and evaluating floor programs.
  • Assist in the tracking and data collection of all programming done in the residence halls.
  • Utilize program tracking forms to assess trends related to floor programming.
  • Attend Resident Assistant and campus programs on a monthly or bi-monthly basis.
  • Present or co-present to Resident Assistants during training and in-services on topics related to programming and community engagement.
  • Design and organize a monthly Residence Life Programming Calendar.
  • Attend meetings with Student Activities and other university groups/stakeholders for large-scale campus programs.
  • Assists in the implementation of all campus wide programs stemming from the Office of Housing and Residence Life.
  • Assist with the development of a formal recognition system for RAs related to bulletin board, door decorations, and program creation.
  • Design and continually update the “Events and Updates” bulletin board outside of the Office of Housing and Residence Life.
  • Participate in all committees deemed necessary by the Director and/or Assistant Director of Housing and Residence Life.
  • Provide presentations for the department and serves a representative at conferences, admissions open house events and other activities.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of the Resident Director and Resident Assistant selection and training process.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned by the Director of Housing & Residence Life or designee.

Fellowship Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

Experience working with people and the ability to relate positively with college students is essential. Experience and leadership in a residence hall or similar setting is necessary. Specific skills should include the ability to be an effective communicator as they will be dealing with people on the phone and in the office on a daily basis. The Graduate Associate for Operations needs to be a full-time graduate student at Springfield College. Any additional commitment in the form of coaching or other tasks must be approved by the Director of Housing and Residence Life.

Contractual arrangements for the academic year, mid-August through May 31, will include a tuition waiver for 10 credit hours per year.
