How has having a Springfield College degree impacted you professionally?

A Springfield College degree has such a level of professional clout. You don’t realize it while on campus, but once you leave Alden Street it’s such an amazing asset to have. The education you work so hard for, the professional experiences the school provides you—it all means something in the professional world, especially in the sports industry. I’ve lost count at how many people in the business know what a SC education does for a person, both personally and professionally. Add to that the alumni network who are always supportive towards other alumni and students, it’s a real golden ticket.

Who influenced you when you were a student at Springfield College and explain the role they played in your life?

My time at Springfield was amazing. The business program is not as large as some of the other programs that the College is known for, which made it easier to get to know my professors and fellow students. My classes with Sandi Coyne-Crowley, Dr. Doyle, and Dr. Fiori were a great base for my future endeavors. Coach Simeone was also a key figure during my SC days, as baseball was a huge part of my life during the four years.

How has having a Springfield College degree impacted you professionally?

The Humanics philosophy that I learned at Springfield helped prepare me for my role in public health. It set the foundation that helping others is important. I believe that being educated in spirit, mind, and body reminded me of that. SC is so much more than a classroom, it is a place that cares about people. It makes you want to help people. SC made me a better person.

If you could share one piece of advice with today's current Springfield College student, what would it be?

Make the most out of the relationships with your professors and fellow students. I have not done a great job keeping in touch over the years, but each time I reconnect with someone it appears as though no time has gone by!

How has having a Springfield College degree impacted you professionally?

In my opinion, a Springfield College degree in athletic training puts you at the forefront as a healthcare professional in the health care field. It prepares you holistically to treat patients, find the root cause, and practice evidence-based medicine. It teaches you to treat the patient as a person and not just by his/her injury or illness. A Springfield College degree teaches you to provide quality health care to the physically active population.

Who influenced you when you were a student at Springfield College and explain the role they played in your life?

John Taffe was instrumental in facilitating my self-confidence both academically and athletically.  Diane Lorenzo influenced me heavily as an undergraduate and graduate student (and now as a co-worker)!  She is a model teacher and mentor.  Diane Potter was my academic advisor, and I was awed by her intelligence and experiences.

Who influenced you when you were a student at Springfield College and explain the role they played in your life?

Coach Dottie Zenaty had an incredible impact on my 6 years at Springfield College. She coached me as part of the varsity field hockey team for 4 years and I had the privilege to coach with the team for two years as I completed my graduate work.

Through her teaching, she pushed me to be the best player, leader, and person I could be. She not only taught me strategy and approaches about field hockey, she taught me life lessons I have carried with me today.

Who influenced you when you were a student at Springfield College and explain the role they played in your life?

I was certainly influenced by the faculty at Springfield College—especially those in the science department. They provided me the knowledge and confidence in the field to further pursue my doctoral degree.

Importantly, while at Springfield, I was able to broaden my scope beyond the classroom. I was lucky enough to be involved in SOAR, NSO, LTC, Student Government and many more. As an LTC facilitator, I had the privilege to work with Michael Boulden ’96, our advisor and director of East Campus. Michael and his wife, Beth Gibney Boulden ’96, proved to be great role models in my time at SC and have become lifelong friends. Michael and Beth taught leadership in service to others through action. I learned so much through their compassion, dedication and of course, humor.

How has having a Springfield College degree impacted you professionally?

While some people select Springfield College for its rich athletic history, I selected it based on my goal to enrich the lives of others. Springfield College graduates are well known for their inherent desire to help others and impact positive change, and I wanted to be one of those people.

If you could share one piece of advice with today's current Springfield College student, what would it be?

Start with the end in mind. Go into Springfield with a plan and exploit its resources for all you can. Everywhere I go where there are professionals from Springfield who help others at the top of their game—physical therapy, athletic training, strength and conditioning, medicine—Springfield is held in the highest regard.

If you could share on piece of advice with today’s current Springfield College student, what would it be?

Choose to be happy! There will always be things to complain about at school or at work, but there are things to be grateful for too.  If there is something that you’re not happy about, change it, or think of a way to help the issue rather than just complain.  Every experience goes by so quickly, SC went by in a flash, choose to enjoy and appreciate every moment!

How has having a Springfield College degree impacted you professionally?

During my second year as a faculty member at SC, I made a brief presentation at a dinner held after the Academic Awards ceremony titled the presentation "A Springfield College Education: No App for That." The point I tried to make is that, as technology spreads and has an ever-growing impact on our lives, there will never be a way to package what you get at SC into an App.   And what you get are timeless skills; no matter what goes on in the world, we need people who care about others and can communicate.

If you could share one piece of advice with today's current Springfield College student, what would it be?

When I was on the cross country and track field teams, the senior women I ran with developed a "psych buddy" system. They would match up a senior runner with a new runner to the team. Each week before a race, the new runners would receive a motivational note from the senior runner. I remember the first note I received, "Shoot for the moon, even if you miss, you will land among the stars." I loved it! Running, like life, sometimes asks to push your boundaries, to make yourself uncomfortable and to strive for something incredible.  Remember, you are capable of anything and everything.

Who influenced you when you were a student at Springfield College and explain the role they played in your life?

The School of Social Work staff are absolutely outstanding and by far the most down to earth people.  They always pushed me to think outside the box, encouraged my creativity, and ensured that I graduated with a true understanding of the mission of social work with an advanced generalist perspective. Dr. Fisher, Dr. Gianesin, Dr. Canning, Dr. Mullin, and Dr. Wronka were the most inspiring social workers to learn from. I had the pleasure of working with and collaborating with all of them not only during graduate school, but also through the post master's certificate program at SSW, and in the local public schools and community.

How has having a Springfield College degree impacted you professionally?

The SC name is well known, respected and holds a great reputation. A Springfield College education can open many doors for you. I believe that I landed my first teaching job interview because of my Springfield College degree. The interview committee knew that I would be prepared for the position because of the education and career readiness skills I received at SC. Having a Springfield College degree also means being a part of a community that provides you with continued support, education and networks.  I have utilized all of these aspects professionally.

If you could share one piece of advice with today's current Springfield College student, what would it be?

Go for it! Maximize every opportunity that SC offers. The curriculum at SC is very different than most places but you will appreciate all the hard work you put in one day and realize how prepared you are. Don't settle on an opportunity while you are young. Go big right out of college and chase whatever dream you have!

Who influenced you when you were a student at Springfield College and explain the role they played in your life?

Springfield College football coaches Mike Delong, Jack Holick, Mike Cerasuolo and all the graduate assistants. These legends taught me that “Hard Work Pays Off,” not only on the football field but in life.  Dr. Gordon Robinson taught me to look at things from outside the box and to always challenge yourself.  Father Leo taught me to focus on enjoying life and to live it to the fullest.

How has having a Springfield College degree impacted you professionally?

My degree from Springfield College has opened many doors throughout my YMCA career. During my education I was exposed to many people that are still close friends. My career was impacted by being selected to an executive director position by another alumnus, Ed Neill. That career move had a ripple effect on who and where I am today as a YMCA professional.
