MOTION COACH: A Practitioner's Virtual Solution

Rich Wood, PhD, '99, G'01 offers a complimentary service for Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Athletic Trainers, and Applied Exercise Scientists who are navigating providing services while remote.

Springfield College physical therapy students work with patients in a clinical setting

First and foremost, we hope you and your families are safe and healthy during this uncertain time. I write to share with you a message from Dr. Rich Wood '99, G'01. Rich is an exercise scientist who was a member of our faculty for a number of years. Without being too redundant with his message below, he has a complimentary offer for PTs, OTs, ATs, and Applied Exercise Scientists that may be of interest as you navigate providing services to those who are at home. In true SC form, once the outbreak hit, Rich and his team reached out to us to offer it free of charge to SC alumni working in OT, PT, AT and Applied Exercise Science.

Please see Rich's introductory email below. The link to the product is embedded in his email. Please join me in extending heartfelt appreciation to Rich. We hope that this will assist you in your new "professional normal."

Know that during these difficult times our alma mater remains strong. Please stay in touch with us and consider clicking on this link to offer our current students any words of wisdom or encouragement you have.

All the best,

Tamie

Greetings fellow alumni!

My name is Rich Wood, Athletic Training class of 1999. I hope this email finds you well in these unprecedented times. I have been hearing so many stories of those in the Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Athletic Training and Exercise Science fields now out of work as a result of COVID-19. I know this is hitting home for so many of my fellow SC alumni, which is why I'm sending this email.

I've been working with a group of developers to create innovative new software, Motion Coach (motion-coach.com), that has completely reinvented the home exercise program. Using a laptop, desktop, tablet or smart phone (anything that has a browser and a camera), the patient has a follow-the-trainer video where they see their own image superimposed in real time on the coach doing the workout. There are no instructions for the patient because this format makes it obvious where they're on or off. Motion Coach then captures a visual record of the workout and uses computer vision to score the patient’s performance. I can't help you get used to doing video consults, but this platform makes the patient's other five workouts that week dramatically more effective.

In this time when remote healthcare has moved from an option to a necessity overnight, I want to offer our help. We are extending the use of our platform for free to SC alumni for 60 days, in hopes it can help patients get the care they need and help employees keep their jobs. Please visit motion-coach.com, sign up for a demo, and tell them you're an SC alum. In addition, you are welcome to reach out to me any time. Wishing you health and happiness.

Yours in Spirit, Mind, and Body,

Rich Wood, Ph.D., '99, G'01
