School Turnaround Initiative
What's the School Turnaround Initiative?
In the spring of 2013, the Corporation for National and Community Service and the U.S. Department of Education released a request for proposals for AmeriCorps School Turnaround funding. Springfield College partnered with the Springfield Public Schools to create a targeted and comprehensive proposal and was awarded a School Turnaround grant, allowing expansion of AmeriCorps services to the highest-need public schools in Springfield.
What's a student support specialist?
Within the School Turnaround Initiative, AmeriCorps members can become student support specialists, who serve Springfield Public School (K-12) students by providing:
- School counseling
- Academic coaching and support
- Social-emotional reinforcement
- Direct interventions
- Identification of risk factors that lead to dropping out
As a student support specialist, you'll support each school’s turnaround plan by serving as a caring adult advocate, mentor, coach, and counselor for students struggling with attendance, academics, and social-emotional issues. And, if there is a particular school or grade level you are interested in serving in, please let us know during your interview and we will do our best to place you at a site that suits your interests.
Part-time positions are available.
