March 28, 2020 -- From the Provost and from Student Affairs | Springfield College

Announcement from the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Dear Students,

We in Academic Affairs understand that these are unprecedented times. All of our faculty and staff have been making extraordinary efforts to prepare to welcome you back from Spring Break.  I am pleased to report that just today the Faculty Senate unanimously endorsed the following statement to you our students.

“We are all working together to adapt to the challenging circumstances presented by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The faculty of Springfield College are here to support all of our students in their learning and life efforts during this and every semester, and we look forward to completing the semester successfully together.”

Also, faculty have been working with the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship, the Office of Academic Technology and Instructional Designers to prepare their Brightspace Classrooms for remote learning. We have worked with faculty to help them identify ways to deliver academic content to you that will help you be successful.  The resources that faculty (and students) have with regard to online and remote learning are continuously being updated to ensure we have the latest and best information available to provide you with the best possible education that we can. As always, our faculty are committed to your success! They are prepared to welcome you into virtual classrooms on Monday and to help you to succeed during this transition to remote learning.

All of our academic support services staff members have been preparing to assist you as we move into our new online environment.  The Academic Success Center remains committed to your success and will provide ways for you to remotely request help and work with our staff for Tutorial Services, Disability & Accessibility Services, Academic Coaching, and MTEL Assistance.  The Academic Advising Center, also committed to your success, is ready to provide personal advising conducted online, assistance through virtual registration planning meetings, and it will continue to empower students to make informed decisions. Library Services will continue to support our students seven days a week with a wide range of hours. With almost 90% of our collections in digital formats, students will be able to access the resources they need. For updates on specific adjustments to services please check out the Library Services COVID-19 FAQ.

Update from the Division of Student Affairs

Dear Students,

Monday, March 30, marks the resumption of classes, although in a different form than many of us are used to. This provides a great opportunity to reconnect with faculty and classmates in your courses and will provide a sense of relief that you are again moving ahead academically.

All of us in Student Affairs want to remind you of two things. First, you’ve got this! You have the skills, adaptability, and resilience to be a successful Springfield College student. That has not changed, even if the way we are teaching and learning has. Second, we in Student Affairs are here for you. Yes, you can do this, and you do not have to do it alone. Next week offers a great opportunity to connect, both in the classroom and beyond.

The best way to connect beyond the classroom is the new “Virtual Student Affairs” site. You will find contact information for all Student Affairs offices, links to our social media, avenues for both information and fun, as well as an online calendar of upcoming virtual events. Check it out.  We are here to support you. Together, we will finish the semester strong.

Counseling Center

The Counseling Center is running a full schedule and counselors have been meeting (virtually) with students. The Center is also opening up slots for intake for students who wish to meet with a counselor. To make an appointment, contact the Counseling Center at counselingcenter@springfield.edu.

Health Center

The Health Center is open and operational and seeing students by appointment only. If you would like to set up an appointment or speak to a healthcare professional, contact healthcenter@springfield.edu or 413-748-3175. If you are feeling unwell and are in the greater Springfield area, please contact them. They may advise you to come to the Health Center to be seen rather than go to overcrowded hospitals or urgent care centers and risk exposure.

Career Center

The Career Center wants to assure you that you will still receive the high quality services that you have been accustomed to, although now remotely. All Career Center counselors will be working via scheduled phone appointments. They will assist with your resume, cover letters, the job search, networking and informational interviewing, how to create a LinkedIn account, graduate school advising, plus other career-related topics. In order to schedule a phone appointment, please email them at career@springfieldcollege.edu.

Office of Student Activities & Campus Union

CAB is still putting on “events.” All you have to do is follow @SCprideCAB on Instagram to get in on all the fun. They will be offering events such as craft tutorials, trivia, bingo, social media challenges, Tik Tok Tuesdays, and even a virtual Peach Fest!

Clubs/Organizations and advisors can anticipate an email next week explaining all of the things students can do virtually. It will explain different ways to meet up with your organization, the budget allocation process for next year, and how to continue to host events and activities.

Contact email: activities@springfieldcollege.edu

Spiritual Life

Spiritual Life will help cultivate a new sense of belonging, to help you to connect and reflect with one another.  A number of their programs have moved online, including daily meditations, Halftime Mid-Week Worship service, and FCA prayer opportunities. The best way to stay up to date and connect with then is through the “Virtual Student Affairs” site. Through the calendar, you will find the latest offerings. Email David McMahon (dmcmahon@springfieldcollege.edu) with any questions or simply to set up a time to talk.

We know that such radical changes will present new and different obstacles. Let us know so that we can help you through this new experience. We are here for you!

All best wishes,

Patrick Love
Vice President for Student Affairs
