What do social workers do?

The social work field allows individuals to make a difference in the lives of others through their practice in a wide variety of employment settings with a range of skills. There are many facets of the social work field, career paths to explore, and options to get your Master of Social Work degree.

If you’re new to the world of social work, or just starting your academic program search, you may be asking yourself, “What do social workers do?”

Well, we’re here to share.

Social workers help in so many ways.

Social workers find themselves in a variety of roles within many industries, securing employment in social service jobs, foster care roles, senior care jobs, military roles, and private practice, among other options. Many social workers take on careers working with substance abuse clinics or serving in roles within correctional facilities and the court system. Serving as a social worker will allow you to help others in the field about which you’re most passionate.

Social workers are equipped to handle many situations.

After earning a diploma in social work, you’ll be uniquely qualified to help individuals and have additional areas of expertise, including crisis intervention social work, hospice and palliative care, addiction counseling, veterans assistance, stress management, and medical care. At Springfield College, our Master of Social Work program will prepare you for the situations, challenges, and experiences that you’ll encounter in the social work field through our advanced generalist practice curriculum, which provides you with the latest knowledge, skills, and real-world practice.

Many social workers work to create change in society.

Have you ever felt the need to leave your mark? Social work is an excellent way to make an impact on the world around you. Many social workers seek opportunities to apply their skills to social worker jobs in legislation, positions in the foster care system, serving in an advocacy role, or finding a way to implement their social work skills into the world of philanthropy. Furthermore, social workers serve as advocates for social justice, striving to aid oppressed populations.

The world is a better place because of social workers. They think about solutions from the perspective of the individuals with whom they work and constantly strive to improve their communities, one person at a time.
