Division of Inclusion and Community Engagement

The Division of Inclusion and Community Engagement promotes and maintains a campus culture of inclusive excellence while simultaneously providing the extended community with a central point of contact for those wishing to explore ways they can connect with and support the College’s outreach efforts. The division provides students, faculty, and staff with opportunities to lead, live, learn, work, and play across lines of identity and difference.

The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion aims to cultivate and sustain a campus climate that is inclusive, student-centered, pluralistic, and safe.

The Office of AmeriCorps offers the opportunity to engage in service that meets the critical educational needs of Springfield youth.

The Office of YMCA Relations educates, inspires, and engages all students to strengthen the YMCA leadership pipeline.

The Springfield College Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Commitment

Springfield College is committed to building a stronger community, recognizing that our students, faculty, staff, and alumni enrich us through their distinctiveness, their experiences, and their perspectives. Over the next 12-18 months we will strengthen our campus culture by focusing on the following broad areas, each grounded in our Humanics mission.

In our efforts, we will define diversity as broadly as possible, understanding that our learning and living community is enhanced by all perspectives. Similarly, we recognize that this work is developmental in nature and, importantly, we affirm the value of all voices and welcome the vulnerability that precedes growth.

Commitment Pillars

  • We will increase diverse representation in our faculty, staff, and students.
  • We will encourage engagement and courageous participation in programs and conversations.
  • We will contribute, lead, and serve in our local community.
  • We will educate for social justice, advocacy, and action in our curricular and co-curricular programs.
  • We will recognize the College’s complex history related to race and social justice, seeking to use the past as a tool for learning and a foundation for future action.

Springfield College recognizes diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging as core values. The quality of the campus experience is strengthened through working and learning with people from diverse experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives. Our goal is not only to make a difference among our community, but to improve equity and justice for all on a global scale.

The Division of Inclusion and Community Engagement promotes diversity and inclusion among all constituents of the College and connects and promotes the College's resources to our neighbors through partnerships as well as events, programming, and various learning opportunities.

The Springfield College community strives to create a place where all members feel safe and welcomed. Through our policies, practices, and daily actions, we are committed to maintaining an inclusive environment. We do not tolerate discrimination or marginalization of any kind, and find such behavior unacceptable within our community. We believe our campus is stronger when all persons, regardless of race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, socioeconomic status, size, diversity of thought, or veteran status feel secure. We hold all members responsible for creating and maintaining a welcoming and safe Springfield College community.

Faces of Diversity

As part of an ongoing project on the Springfield Stories blog, the Division of Inclusion and Community Engagement have asked staff and faculty to share their stories in a series of posts called "Faces of Diversity." The goal is to celebrate the wonderful differences within the Springfield College community through storytelling while learning a little about ourselves and each other in the process.

Hatred has no place at Springfield College. As a campus community, we have the fortitude and courage to end hate. In fall 2020, a group of students, faculty, and staff came together to discuss ways that we as a community could be more welcoming and inclusive.

Because hatred has no place here, we have chosen to launch a campaign titled "Educate. End Hate." We welcome community engagement and involvement in making Springfield College a place where all feel safe, welcomed, and affirmed.

Springfield College All-College Gender & Sexuality Alliance

The Springfield College All-College Gender & Sexuality Alliance (GSA) is composed of students and employees who are committed to reducing inequality faced by LGBTQ+ people at Springfield College and beyond. This includes (but is not limited to) gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, transgender, and gender nonconforming people. We have an email list, meet once every two to three weeks, generate campus programming, and engage in other activities. For more information, please contact David McMahon at dmcmahon@springfield.edu or Charlene Elvers at celvers@springfield.edu.

Safe Zone

Safe Zone helps to create a more accepting, affirming, supportive, inclusive, and equal environment for LGBTQ individuals at Springfield College through educational training sessions for faculty members, staff members, and students. Sessions are designed to generate greater awareness, knowledge, empathy, and commitment to action regarding issues, concerns, and inequality related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

Springfield College is committed to valuing and validating the gender identity and expression of members of the campus community. For more information about gender pronouns and how to use gender inclusive language, click here.
