The Springfield College community is proud to join colleges and universities from around the country in supporting the Swipe Out Hunger program, the leading nonprofit organization that helps find solutions regarding hunger among college students. The Swipe Out Hunger program implements a range of anti-hunger programs, including “The Swipe Drive,” which enables students to donate meals to their peers facing food insecurity on campus.

“In working with our Vice President for Finance and Administration William Guerrero, we were able to join the Swipe Out Hunger movement,” said Springfield College Center for Service and Leadership Director Charlene Elvers. “It’s a national program that Guerrero was part of in the past, and we are excited to expand our assistance to students when helping with food insecurity.”

Students on the Springfield College campus can use the “donate meals” option within the Get App to donate their extra meals to fellow students. Students on our campus can request meals by using the Swipe Out Hunger request form that is linked from the main navigation on PrideNET. By clicking the form, students can request meals that are available at Cheney Dining Hall.

Members of the Swipe Out Hunger organization work closely with campuses to design and develop anti-hunger programs, tailored to the unique needs of each community. The national movement spans more than 400 colleges and has served 2.5 million nutritious meals to date.

In addition, the Springfield College Pride Pantry has moved into a new location on the first floor inside the Flynn Campus Union, across from the Career Center. Opened in 2017 to assist both graduate and undergraduate students with food insecurity, the new location allows students to have easier access to pick up their items, and the increased amount of space allows for an expanded variety of items that the Pride Pantry can provide.

“The Pride Pantry continues to be an important resource for Springfield College students,” continued Elvers. “We will remain committed to collecting donations to help keep the shelves full with non-perishable items. We are also working with some community groups to assist with bringing some perishable items to the pantry, now that we have the space and refrigeration.”

The Pride Pantry continues to be led by student volunteers. Members of the campus community who wish to donate to the Pride Pantry can do so by using the donation box located outside the Pantry entrance.

The Pride Pantry is open on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesdays from 4 to 7 p.m., and Fridays from 2 to 5 p.m.
