Fall 2024 THRIVE Scholars Program Workshop Series

Understanding Our Positionality as Social Workers: Who we are inevitably shows up in what we do

Wednesday, October 30, 2024, 6-7:30 p.m. ET
Join us on Zoom: 724 869 4971

Together we will explore the concept of positionality and its impact on social work practice. Participants will examine how their personal identities, values, and experiences shape their approach to the profession, including their interpretation of the social work code of ethics and competency standards. Through reflection and discussion, led by Dominique Shabazz, DSW, director of Practicum Education and assistant professor at Springfield College, attendees will gain insight into how positionality influences their professional lens and decision-making. The session will offer opportunities to engage in self-exploration and deepen understanding of culturally considerate practice.

Dominique Shabazz’s passion includes the advancement of social work education and cultivating a positive educational experience for learners. Her research and interests include juvenile justice, women’s issues, culturally considerate education practices, and human rights advocacy. She is devoted to the leadership development of social workers and to the service of the most vulnerable populations. Shabazz also owns a psychotherapy practice in Connecticut in which she supports women on their healing journey. Additionally, she has provided her expertise as a consultant for the likes of New York Public Radio children’s programming, community organizations offering youth mentoring in Connecticut, and as a board member for a nonprofit social service organization in Maryland providing low and no cost mental health services for all.

This virtual event is free and open to the Springfield College community and the public.
