Athletic Training - Intramural and Club Sports

Certified Athletic Trainer:

Athletic Trainers (ATs) are healthcare professionals who render service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, in accordance with their education and training and the states' statutes, rules and regulations. As a part of the healthcare team, services provided by ATs include injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.

Qualifications:

  • Board Certified Athletic Trainer through the Board of Certification, Inc.
  • Board Licensed Athletic Trainer through the Massachusetts Board of Allied Health
  • Hold a current and valid certification in professional rescue level or higher CPR/AED
  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.

Primary Responsibilities:

The major responsibility for this position is to provide athletic health care to members of Springfield College’s club sports population through direct team coverage, athletic training room coverage and/or Sports Injury Rehabilitation coverage as directed by the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation.

Secondary Responsibilities: 

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Provide home event coverage for all club sports teams.
  • Provide open clinic hours for injury evaluation and rehabilitation for all club sport athletes.
  • Conduct baseline concussion screening (ImPact, BESS, etc.) for all club sport athletes.
  • Attend bi-weekly meetings with the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation.
  • Manage inventory of athletic training supplies and notify the Assistant Direction of Campus Recreation if more supplies are needed.
  • Travel to regional or national contests if needed, as directed by the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation.
  • Attend SC-ATRN service meetings as directed by the Coordinator of Athletic Training Services, the Clinical Coordinator, or attend Athletic Training Education Program meetings as directed by the Program Director.
  • Communicate any concerns regarding team coverage needs (team, athletes, coaches, schedules, etc.) to the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation.
  • Attend weekly meetings to discuss coverage of upcoming practices and/or contests and communicate any requested changes to be approved by the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation.
  • Provide quality clinical instruction, supervision, and evaluation of athletic training students as assigned by the Clinical Coordinator.
  • Become familiar with, follow, and implement the educational guidelines for clinical field experiences outlined in the SC-ATEP Preceptor Handbook, Clinical Skills and Proficiency Manual, and as specified for each fieldwork in the following outlines: ATRN 284, 285, 384, 385, 484, and 485. This includes dress code and modeling behaviors.
  • Become familiar with, follow, and implement the athletic training services guidelines for intercollegiate coverage as outlined in the Springfield College-Athletic Training Service Policy and Procedures Manual and the NCAA Sports Medicine Handbook.
  • Attend an Initial Preceptor workshop and subsequent updates as required and sponsored by Springfield College ATEP.

Fellowship Required Qualifications

Position Requirements: 

The person in this position is expected to adhere to NATA Code of Ethics, SC-ATEP Code of Professional Standards and Behaviors, and Springfield College Department of Campus Recreation policies and procedures. The person in this position must be Board Certified as an Athletic Trainer, must hold Massachusetts licensure to practice as an Athletic Trainer, must have a Bachelor’s Degree, and must possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
