Coordinator of the Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement

Primary Responsibilities:

Manage the Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement, developing and coordinating community-based educational and health/wellness programs

Coordinate all aspects of Homework Heroes (a drop-in homework assistance and tutoring program).  This includes outreach to the city of Springfield and public schools to promote the program to all grade levels.

Develop program policies and procedures that include academic enrichment activities that can be implemented with youth after homework is completed  

Monitor and assess the progress of Homework Heroes and the youth engaged in the program.  Communicate with families of youth on a regular basis.

Provide direct training and supervision of the undergraduate site leaders (two to four each year) and student staff (10-15 each year) 

Recruit, hire, train and supervise student staff.  Conduct performance reviews and provide logistical and technical support.

Under the direction of the Director of the Center for Service and Leadership, serve as an outreach agent to establish partnerships at schools, community-based organizations and local community members for collaborative events that take place at the CLCE.

Coordinate and supervise special programs and events at the CLCE. Develop and manage a reservation system along with policies and procedures for groups (both on and off campus) to use the center.

Work with student clubs and other student groups (athletics) to utilize the CLCE for service opportunities and educational/social/team-building activities.

Serve as the building manager for the CLCE which includes weekly inspections of the building to ensure cleanliness and maintenance of the facility.  Turn in work orders as needed.

Secondary Responsibilities:  

  • Interact with schools and community-based organizations to better understand their environment and needs.
  • Recruit students through residence hall programs, campus activities, and other means to increase awareness of volunteerism and service learning.
  • Offer training with support to students to ensure their awareness of developmental, cultural and/or ethnic differences which may exist within the population at their placements.
  • Assist students in developing learning objectives and assist with supervision of students receiving academic credit for their service learning experience.
  • Assist with coordination of College Service Fairs, College Visit Days and New Student Orientation (NSO) as necessary.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities offered through the Division of Inclusion and Campus Life
  • Serve on committees as needed.

Fellowship Required Qualifications

Position Requirements:

Applicants must be matriculated into a graduate program at Springfield College and be able to successfully pass a Springfield Public Schools background check and obtain driver safety certification through Springfield College. Preference given to candidates who are available at least one time/week during Homework Heroes Program hours (Tuesday/Thursday 5-7pm) 

Housing at the Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement is provided as part of this position

Desired Qualifications:  

  • Experience supervising, teaching, or leading college age adults
  • Experience working with youth in an educational setting or afterschool program
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with productivity software (Microsoft Office and Google)
  • Ability to organize and initiate program and activities
  • Ability to solve problems and work independently
