Alvin J. McKenzie Scholarship Endowment
Alvin “Big Joe” McKenzie aspired to live the American dream, but the dream seemed a long way away when he immigrated to America from Jamaica at age 39 in 1975. Without a job or any marketable skills, Alvin decided that a college education was the key to achieving success and committed to earning his degree, no matter what obstacles stood in his way. His perseverance paid off, Alvin earned his bachelor's degree from Springfield College in 1992.
Alvin passed away in 2007, but his legacy lives on through the Alvin J. McKenzie Scholarship Endowment at Springfield College. Led by his son, Amaricko (Ricky) McKenzie, his family created this scholarship as tribute to a man who was so dedicated to education, his family, and his community.
