Athletic Training Residency Curriculum
The Springfield College Athletic Training Residency is a 24-month program of rigorous clinical and didactic experiences in the collegiate setting with engagement across the lifespan for faculty, staff, and community members in addition to full-time athletic healthcare with NCAA Division III student-athletes. The program begins August 1 of each year.
Athletic Healthcare
Residents will be assigned to provide full-time (35-hour) athletic healthcare services at Springfield College to gain experience in a mentored and supported environment. Springfield College functions under a modified medical model, with individual team assignments and shared patient load responsibilities.
Clinical Mentoring
During each curriculum block (Preseason, Fall, Spring, Summer) residents will be assigned a mentor to advance their skills in the dimensions of prevention and wellness in addition to their skill in evaluation and treatment of orthopedic and sports-related injuries. This includes, but is not limited to, examination, diagnosis, prognosis, intervention, and return to sport.
Scholarship
Residents will engage in regular scholarly activity, as defined by Boyer, to expose them to the most current evidence-based practices in prevention and wellness. Residents will develop and present case studies, simulations, quality improvement initiatives, athlete wellness lectures and participate in literature reviews and general faculty/staff discussions. Residents will also serve as a teaching assistant for ATRN 504: Prevention & Acute Care of Injury & Illness (first year), and ATRN 510: Emergency Preparedness (second year), which are taught as part of the MSAT curriculum.
Didactics
Residents will attend weekly seminars that include lectures, workshops, skill development and practice, and problem-based learning which focus on the dimensions of prevention and wellness and how they relate to populations across the lifespan.
Interprofessional Collaboration
Residents will work alongside professionals involved with the Athletic Training Department at Springfield College, including (but not limited to) orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine physicians, athletic trainers, and athletic training students. Additionally, residents will learn about, from, and with student health center providers (nurse practitioners, physician assistants), strength and conditioning graduate assistants and faculty, licensed mental health professionals, athletic counseling graduate students, and sport and exercise psychology students.
