Springfield College Alumnus Remains Influential Leader at MetLife Stadium

Springfield College alumnus Ron VanDeVeen ’89 grew up just 20 minutes from Giants Stadium and the Meadowlands Arena in East Rutherford, N.J., attending his first concert and football game at the venues. More than three decades later, VanDeVeen has built a distinguished career of his own, establishing himself as a trusted and influential leader behind one of the country’s most iconic sports and entertainment destinations.
“When I graduated from Springfield College, I knew I wanted to work in sports so I applied to every team in the New York/New Jersey area,” explained VanDeVeen. “The summer after I graduated, I ended up getting a part-time job with the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA), which managed Giants Stadium, Meadowlands Arena, and the Meadowlands Racetrack. I worked for the road department during the day from 7 AM to 3:30 PM, and then headed over to the Meadowlands to work from 4 PM to 9 PM at night. I did that for about three months.”
Working hard and paying his dues has remained at the cornerstone of VanDeVeen’s successful career path. From the early stages of his professional journey, he understood that meaningful success is built over time through dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to learn at every step. VanDeVeen has always embraced each opportunity as a chance to gain experience, develop his skills, and earn the trust of those around him.
“I have always taken pride in being one of the hardest working employees, and that hasn’t changed over the years,” explained VanDeVeen. “After working part-time for the NJSEA, I was offered a full-time position as a cleaning supervisor at the Meadowlands Arena. While in that role, I always kept asking if there was anything more I could do and learn. During this time in the early to mid-90’s, being ADA compliant at the arena/stadium was a big topic. Because I kept asking for more, I was handed the huge document that was provided to make sure we were ADA compliant, and I took on the challenge of overseeing that task.”
VanDeVeen would keep advancing through the NJSEA organization with roles in stadium operations, bookings, college athletics, and corporate sales. He ultimately was elevated to director of booking for Giants Stadium and the Meadowlands Arena.
“At 28 years old, it was a great opportunity to learn a different side of the business, and I realized I really loved that job.”
VanDeVeen spent 19 years with the NJSEA, ultimately serving as vice president and general manager for Giants Stadium and the IZOD Center. He would eventually transition to being a part of New Meadowlands Stadium Company, LLC (MetLife Stadium).
“The State of New Jersey was divesting itself of the venue business, and the NFL teams were going to manage MetLife Stadium,” explained VanDeVeen. “In 2009, I started booking events and also led the front of house staff which includes parking, traffic, guest services, and security.. I did that for about six years until I moved into the president and CEO role.”
Through his leadership, expertise, and commitment to excellence, VanDeVeen has played an important role in the stadium’s growth and success, helping create memorable experiences for millions of fans and visitors while navigating the demands of operating a world-class facility.
“It’s been an incredible experience, and I have appreciated working with so many great individuals,” explained VanDeVeen. “When booking an event, there is nothing better than being a part of the process from start to finish. Seeing thousands of people enjoying an event and knowing the role I played in providing that experience is the most satisfying aspect of my job.”
Most recently, VanDeVeen was part of his second FIFA World Cup hosting eight matches at MetLife Stadium, including the Final on July 19. VanDeVeen was instrumental in securing the World Cup, an effort that spanned nearly the entire tenure of his presidency.
“The World Cup is amazing, and it was nine years of planning,” explained VanDeVeen. “It was another incredible experience. There were about 100 employees that worked this year’s World Cup that also worked the 1994 event, and I’m honored to be part of that group. It’s a lot of work, but it’s all worth it.”
Under VanDeVeen’s leadership, MetLife Stadium has been named the highest grossing stadium in the world consistently since the building opened in 2010.
“Last year, we hosted 23 concerts alone,” explained VanDeVeen. “Obviously you have the New York Giants and New York Jets football games, but we have also hosted Super Bowl XLVIII, Copa America Centenario, WrestleMania 29 and 35, NHL Stadium Series, Supercross, Army/Navy Game, The Rolling Stones, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Chesney and countless others.”
Now, after a decade as president and chief executive officer, VanDeVeen will transition to a newly created position of chief programming officer.
“The timing is perfect to hand the baton to Mark Stefanacci, who has been a key member of my staff throughout my tenure,” explained VanDeVeen. “I truly love booking events, so it’s great opportunity to stay with MetLife Stadium.”
Throughout his career, VanDeVeen has always been willing to stay connected with Springfield College and continue to help out current students and alumni looking to expand their careers.
“It’s all about networking and I tell students that all the time,” explained VanDeVeen. “On top of that, if you work really hard and do a good job, you will do very well. The advice I give is to be on time, don’t say 'I don’t know,' say 'I’ll find out,' and be able to make decisions. Also, know your limitations, but work on them as well.”
As VanDeVeen moves into another phase of his successful career, he is eager to focus even more time on different aspects of life he has always enjoyed, especially spending time with his wife, Wendy, and children, Darby and Ryan.
“I actually met my wife at the arena when she was working in marketing,” explained VanDeVeen. “Despite the long hours working at the stadium, I always prioritized family and made a point to make sure I didn’t miss any of my kids’ sporting events. I also love to travel, so I am looking forward to maybe doing some more of that moving forward. I did a semester abroad in London, England when I was at Springfield College, and that was awesome. I have really enjoyed my career and I am excited to continue in this new role.”
Since graduating from Springfield College, VanDeVeen has stayed connected with Springfield College Associate Director for Alumni and Family Relations Maria D’Agostino Crawford ’91, P’24. He has participated in college-led alumni networking events with current students, and he is always looking at opportunities that allow him to visit the campus.
“Maria has been great to work with over the years, and I always enjoyed talking with aspiring students,” explained VanDeVeen. “I was able to get back to campus for my 10-year reunion, but it’s been a while since then. I enjoyed my time at Springfield College and it would be fun to get back on campus soon.”
