John Hedbavny ’68, G’70, is a dedicated educator and youth development leader whose journey was deeply shaped by his time at Springfield College. During the summer months of 1979, 1980, and 1981, he displayed his values of leadership, service, and community, while serving as camp director for Camp Massasoit.
“I was in my role as the Springfield College associate dean of students when I was approached about stepping in as camp director,” explained Hedbavny. “I had a nine-month contract, and I always had a summer job. I had been in charge of summer camping through my YMCA connections and I always had a strong interest in the benefits of summer camp for youth. I was very interested in being a part of Camp Massasoit and I really enjoyed the three summers leading camp."
Hedbavny would be the first Camp Massasoit director to achieve accreditation through the American Camp Association (ACA). Through a lot of hard work, Hedbavny was determined to maintain that Camp Massasoit was the top choice for youth and their families when determining their summer camp plans.
“I had experience working with the ACA through my work with the YMCA,” explained Hedbavny. “Accreditation is so important because it tells the public, especially parents, that the camp meets the required standards. There was a lot of written documentation to show what I was leading would meet the standards. Camp Massasoit is a special camp that fulfills everything that is important in summer camp program and the ACA fully supports that.”
As Camp Massasoit director, Hedbavny also had a mission to make sure summer camp was enjoyable for all kids. He not only wanted his campers to enjoy the physical benefits of being active, but also to embrace the spirit and the mind benefits as well.
“You want children to have a good time and be safe, that’s always the goal,” explained Hedbavny. “As I was training the camp staff, that’s all I ever stressed to them was to make sure the kids were enjoying themselves with their friends, and having positive moments they will always remember.”
Hedbavny recently had an opportunity to take a tour of East Campus and reminisce about how special the setting is as camp season quickly approaches. While meeting up with Director of East Campus and Outdoor Programs Ben Taylor ’99, G’16, and Associate Director of East Campus and Outdoor Programs Angela Veatch, G’07, the visit brought so much joy to Hedbavny. He cherishes how Camp Massasoit continues to flourish and remains such an important part of our campus culture.
“It’s so nice to hear so many of the great things that I remember while leading camp are still taking place,” explained Hedbavny. “We had family nights where we cooked hot dogs and hamburgers, and families could view the camp activities. We would go down to the community ring and we had a campfire program when we sang songs and put on skits. During the camp sessions, it was very similar to how it is today with archery, arts and crafts, swimming, boating, canoeing, and nature programs. I really appreciate the traditions of Camp Massasoit and having the groups start each day at the community ring. They raise the flag at the start of the day and bring it down at the end of the day. Camp Massasoit is special, and I think how it continues to be run so well means a lot to all of us who have been a part of it.”
Not only did Hedbavny earn two degrees from Springfield College, but he also began his professional career at the College, serving as assistant to the dean of students for three years. Next, he was promoted to assistant dean of students from 1971 through 1980 before spending the next two years as associate dean of students. Working with students has always been a passion for Hedbavny, and his time as Camp Massasoit director only enhanced his experiences on campus.
“Working Camp Massasoit also gave me the opportunity to work with college students in the recreation program and help lead their efforts as camp counselors and activity specialists,” explained Hedbavny. “They gained experience working with youth that helped them when preparing for their careers after graduation. While at Springfield, I also taught camp counseling and camp administration, so working with students always brought me a lot of joy.”
Hedbavny earned his bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Sociology, while also completing his master’s degree in Education. Hedbavny’s Springfield College education has always led him to living out a daily commitment to working with youth. Eventually fulfilling his childhood dream of starting a career in the YMCA network after his time at Springfield College, Hedbavny truly appreciates his time as Camp Massasoit director.
“I love Springfield College, and I loved my time with Camp Massasoit,” explained Hedbavny. “I am looking forward to the 90th anniversary of Camp Massasoit this summer and watching campers and their families enjoy their time at East Campus. It will be a great summer.”
