Springfield College Honors Program student Laura Tran is the first recipient of the Eliott G. '74 and Deborah Baker Endowed Scholarship Fund. Tran was recognized as a student who has demonstrated high academic achievement and a love of learning throughout her educational career.

A native of West Springfield, Mass., Tran is majoring in biology. She earned dean’s list status for the 2020 Springfield College fall semester for her academic excellence. Tran is one of the Class of 2024 representatives on the Honors Student Council, a group elected by peers that consults on activities for the Honors Program and that organizes its social activities.

“In her interview with the scholarship screening committee, Laura distinguished herself in terms of the growth we observed in her from the fall term to the spring term,” said Springfield College Honors Program Director Rebecca Lartigue, PhD. “She spoke incredibly warmly and with mature understanding about the difference a mentor had made in her life, about the importance of seeking out support networks, and about challenging herself. Laura is a curious, highly motivated student who is well on her way to becoming the well-rounded, life-long learner that we hope all of our graduates will be.”

The Eliott G. '74 and Deborah Baker Endowed Scholarship Fund is designed to provide scholarship funds based on financial need for first-year students who are first-generation. Scholarship funds will be awarded to students who meet the criteria for selection into the Springfield College Honors Program. The students' academic portfolio is critically reviewed by the Honors Program committee and an invitation to apply is extended.

The mission of the Springfield College Honors Program is to cultivate and nourish a diverse, inclusive community of highly-motivated academic leaders who ask difficult questions, respect different approaches and points of view, and contribute to the advancement of knowledge and understanding. Through experiences both in and out of the classroom, the Honors Program prepares graduates to approach life with curiosity and an openness to inquiry, and to inspire these qualities in others.
