How to Get Started With a Counselor | Springfield College

The thought of coming to counseling may feel overwhelming or intimidating. Our staff is here to welcome you and help you step-by-step to make the process a bit easier. Here is how to connect to the center:

  • Reach out to set up a mental health screening with a counselor, our options include:
  • Complete paperwork for your screening:
    • You will be asked to arrive 15 minutes early for your screening appointment to fill out paperwork regarding your psychological, medical, and personal history. This information will remain confidential.

  • Attend a screening:
    • Screenings are meetings, roughly 15 to 20 minutes, where you meet with a counselor to briefly discuss what is bringing you to counseling. The purpose is to provide important information about your counseling needs and make a referral to an appropriate group, individual therapist, or therapist in the community. You will be contacted within approximately one week of your intake with information regarding your next individual or group therapy session.

  • Attend your first counseling/group session:
    • First sessions are usually scheduled within a week of a screening. Counseling sessions follow a biweekly schedule and run for roughly 45 minutes, whereas group sessions meet weekly and run from 1-1.5 hours.
