Tips for Supportive Conversations | Springfield College

Here are some guidelines to follow when
you are concerned about a student:

  • Listen openly and offer empathetic support. The most helpful thing you can do is communicate that you are willing to help.
  • Encourage the student to reach out for support to on-campus resources (Residence Life, Academic Success Center, Dean of Students, Spiritual Life, Counseling Center).
  • Fill out a “student of concern” form if you would like a select group of professionals on campus to monitor the situation and intervene if necessary.
  • If you are concerned that the student is in immediate danger, call Public Safety at (413) 748-5555.

Tips for Supportive Conversations:

  • Stay calm and be present. Talk slowly and use reassuring tones. Encourage the student to breathe and take their time when talking.
  • Make sure you both have a quiet, private place to talk.
  • Ask simple questions. Repeat them if necessary, using the same words each time.
  • Validate by repeating or paraphrasing what the student is saying, or reflecting what they are feeling.
  • Refrain from having important conversations via text.
  • Try not to express anger or frustration, even though you may have good reasons to feel annoyed.
  • Don't threaten to call Public Safety unless you intend to do so.
  • Avoid invalidating the student’s experience by criticizing their actions or minimizing their feelings.
