Alash

Tuesday, October 1 at 7:30 p.m.
Marsh Memorial Chapel

Alash is a trio of master throat singers (xöömeizhi) from Tuva, a tiny republic in the heart of Inner Asia. The ancient art of throat singing (xöömei) was developed among the nomadic herdsmen of this region. Alash remains grounded in this tradition while expanding its musical vocabulary with new ideas from the West.

Alash's inaugural U.S. tour was sponsored in 2006 by the Open World Leadership program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Washington Post described their music as “utterly stunning.” Since then, Alash has been in high demand internationally, performing in concert halls and festivals in Europe and Asia as well as North and South America. You won’t want to miss this incredible opportunity to hear Alash live on campus!

This event is free and open to the Springfield College community and the public.

Novelist Thérèse Soukar Chehade

Novelist Thérèse Soukar Chehade will read from her new novel set during Lebanon’s civil war. Chehade’s first novel, Loom, won the 2011 Arab American Book Award in fiction.

Born in Beirut, Thérèse Soukar Chehade moved to the United States in August 1983, eight years after the start of the civil war. She holds an MFA in writing from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and lives in Granby, Massachusetts.

A Q&A and book signing will follow the reading.

Colors of Grief: Perspectives of families after loss

November 11-15
William Blizard Gallery
Second Floor, Blake Hall, Open Monday-Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Opening Reception: Monday, November 11, 5-7 p.m. at the William Blizard Gallery

Rick’s Place, a beacon of support for children, teens, and families navigating grief, is proud to present this special gallery exhibit and opening reception in commemoration of National Children's Grief Awareness Month. We recognize this each November to normalize the conversation around grief and loss, and its impact on young people.

Rick’s Place artists were encouraged to reflect on their unique grief journeys and how these experiences have left an indelible mark. Each piece presented encapsulates an intimate, heartfelt narrative of personal journeys through grief.

We invite the community to join our Memory Wall Installation by contributing a photograph of a loved one who has died, along with a message or note in their memory. Additionally, during the opening reception, you'll have the chance to express your creativity at our collaborative art-making tables. We look forward to getting creative with you at this very special event.
