Inclusion at Springfield College

Elevate Inclusiveness.

At Springfield College, we lead with an open mind and an open heart. We embrace inclusivity. Everyone deserves an education that develops the best version of ourselves. We aim to cultivate and sustain a campus climate that is, among other ideals, inclusive, student-centered, and safe.

At Springfield College we provide opportunities to lead, live, learn, work, and play across lines of identity and difference. We are committed to building a stronger community, recognizing that our students, faculty, staff, and alumni enrich us through their distinctiveness, their experiences, and their perspectives.

Hatred Has No Place at Springfield College

As a campus community, we have the fortitude and courage to end hate. In fall 2020, a group of students, faculty, and staff came together to discuss ways that we as a community could be more welcoming and inclusive.

Because hatred has no place here, we have chosen to launch a campaign titled "Educate. End Hate." We welcome community engagement and involvement in making Springfield College a place where all feel safe, welcomed, and affirmed.

Land Acknowledgement

We acknowledge that Springfield College stands on the traditional homelands of the Indigenous Algonkian people known as “Agawam.” The Agawam were closely related and diplomatically connected to the Quaboag to the East; the Podunk to the South; the Woronoco to the West; and the Nonotuck, Pocumtuck, and Sokoki to the North. We acknowledge the memory of these Indigenous nations who, after having inhabited this land for more than 10,000 years, were displaced in the 1600s to 1700s by English colonial settlers who exploited Native generosity and provoked warfare.  We acknowledge the surviving Native nations of what is now called “New England”: the Nipmuc and the Wampanoag to the East; the Mohegan and Pequot and Schaghticoke to the South; the Mohican to the West; and the Abenaki to the North. We affirm, honor, and respect the sovereignty of these and hundreds of other Native American nations across North America that survive today.

Springfield College All-College Gender & Sexuality Alliance

The Springfield College All-College Gender & Sexuality Alliance (GSA) is composed of students and employees who are committed to reducing inequality faced by LGBTQ+ people at Springfield College and beyond. This includes (but is not limited to) gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, transgender, and gender nonconforming people. We have an email list, meet once every two to three weeks, generate campus programming, and engage in other activities. For more information, please contact David McMahon at dmcmahon@springfield.edu or Charlene Elvers at celvers@springfield.edu.

Safe Zone

Safe Zone helps to create a more accepting, affirming, supportive, inclusive, and equal environment for LGBTQ individuals at Springfield College through educational training sessions for faculty members, staff members, and students. Sessions are designed to generate greater awareness, knowledge, empathy, and commitment to action regarding issues, concerns, and inequality related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

Springfield College is committed to valuing and validating the gender identity and expression of members of the campus community. Learn more about gender pronouns and how to use gender inclusive language.
