The Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Springfield College offers students classes and personal mentoring from professional artists, internships for all majors, beautiful studios, and state-of-the-art technology.

Programs prepare students for new career opportunities in computer graphics and digital arts, dance, studio art, art therapy, and art education in an open and welcoming environment. 

Art and Design Studios

Our art and design studios at Springfield College provide beautiful open spaces, with natural lighting, for just about any project a student can imagine. The visual arts space offers more than 15,000-square-feet of open, well-equipped studio space arranged to inspire and empower aspiring artists, designers, and innovators alike.

Drawing and Painting Studio

In our drawing and painting studio, students will find easels, drawing boards, and a rich assortment of mediums including ink, charcoal, graphite, pastels, acrylics, and oils. A comprehensive range of brushes, palette knives, and sponges enables artists to explore various techniques and styles as they bring their ideas to life on canvas and paper.

Sculpture Studio

The sculpture studio boasts a range of modeling tools, including plaster, wood, and clay workshop stations, equipped with saws, scissors, and sandpaper. Students can explore papier mâché techniques with tools such as wire, hot glue guns, and crepe paper, alongside mold-making tools for bending, cutting, and crafting. In addition, a selection of molds and casting materials invites experimentation with plaster and cardboard, allowing for the creation of unique sculptural forms.

Printmaking Studio

Our printmaking studio is equipped with traditional tools such as presses, brayers, and screens. Students can explore a variety of techniques—from linocut and screen printing to block printing and mono-printing. The studio is filled with an ever-changing collection of papers, inks, and tools to encourage a tactile and experimental approach to surface design.

2D Design Studio

The 2D design studio is equipped with an expansive array of tools, including a selection of rulers and precision measuring tools, triangles, technical pencils, templates, and drafting tables fostering a hands-on exploration of the endless possibilities of traditional, two-dimensional design. In this space, students can bring inspiration into reality, experimenting with space, shape, line, form, texture, and typography.

Craft Studio

Our spacious craft studio features an assortment of work tables and benches made from robust materials, allowing students to craft their visions with ease. Essential tools, such as scissors, utility knives, glue, fabric, and precision-cutting mats provide the perfect foundation for intricate crafts, model-making, fabric design, and prototyping.

Ceramic Art Studio

Our fully functioning ceramic art studio features earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain offering low-to-mid and high-fire clay bodies. There is plenty of table space and storage area to accommodate large and small projects. The studio is flooded with natural light along an entire wall. The Springfield College ceramic studio has a materials lab and a full library of low-mid-to-high fire glaze commercial and studio made.

Computer Labs

Our computer labs are designed to provide students with access to the latest computer software to enhance  their educational experience. These advanced technologies empower students to explore diverse areas in digital media, animation, game development, and virtual reality. The labs are equipped with professional workstations that support both Microsoft and Apple operating systems, promoting cross-platform computer learning.

The Apple Lab is outfitted with 19 of the newest iMac computers. These workstations offer a comprehensive suite of software for graphic design and multimedia.

The PC Lab contains an array of the latest Dell workstations, running the most recent Microsoft Windows operating systems. The lab also allows students access to 3D printers for rapid prototyping, and industrial design.

Performance, Dance, and Gallery Spaces

Dance Studios

The Department of Dance at Springfield College has two beautiful studios located on both ends of campus.

FACS Dance Studio: Our most recently renovated studio (2019) features floor-to-ceiling mirrors, a sprung gray Marley floor, two full walls of large windows flooding the space with natural light, Bluetooth speakers, ballet barres along one of the long walls with windows, freestanding barres, and three columns. This bright and gorgeous studio space is used for dance classes, guest artist classes and workshops, rehearsals, and informal dance concerts.

Fuller Arts Center and Appleton Auditorium

The Fuller Arts Center and Appleton Auditorium feature seating for 300 and an approximately 1,200-square-foot proscenium stage. The facility serves as a performing arts space as well as the location for larger lectures, meetings, and public panels. It provides a handsome lobby and some equipment upgrades.

William Blizard Gallery

The William Blizard Gallery is the primary art gallery of Springfield College. It is dedicated to showcasing the work of undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts as well as professional artists from the local community and beyond. The gallery aims to be a creative community space which supports experimental work in the arts and fosters dialogue and programming in arts and culture.
