Goal 1 : Be able to demonstrate and apply knowledge of the following MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Professional Standards for Teachers:

  • Standard I: Curriculum, planning and assessment
  • Standard II: Teaching all students;
  • Standard IV: Professional culture.
    • SLO 1 : Achieve a minimum rating of “proficient” in the Quality dimension only (which is the Readiness Threshold as minimum expectations for performance) for each of the six Essential Elements which have been determined by DESE to represent teacher readiness within the Candidate Assessment Performance (CAP) student teaching practicum:
      • designing and implementing well-structured lessons with measurable objectives that align with state and national standards (Standard I: Curriculum, planning and assessment)
      • making adjustments to practices based on informal or formal assessment results (Standard I: Curriculum, planning and assessment)
      • meeting diverse needs by using inclusive strategies (Standard II: Teaching all students)
      • designing and implementing a safe learning environment (Standard II: Teaching all students)
      • setting high expectations through instruction, participant engagement, and assessment in all three learning domains (Standard II: Teaching all students)
      • reflecting regularly on teaching, learning, and interactions with others (Standard IV: Professional culture)

Goal 2a : Be able to demonstrate the following physical education content knowledge:

  • Principles of developmentally sound physical health and fitness;
  • Lifespan growth, development, and nutrition;
  • History and foundations of kinesiology
  • Planning curriculum and instruction for a range of appropriate play and sports for PreK-12 using the relevant motor skills;
  • Legal and moral responsibilities including appropriate physical and safety limitations, first aid and Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

Goal 2b : Be able to demonstrate the following health education content knowledge:

  • Human growth and development: physical (anatomy and physiology), emotional/mental, social, intellectual, and moral
  • Food science and nutrition
  • Physical fitness
  • Human sexuality
  • Disease prevention and control
  • First aid, safety, and injury prevention
  • Tobacco, alcohol, and other substance abuse prevention
  • Current topics in health education, including family violence, child abuse, suicide, sexually transmitted diseases (including AIDS), teen pregnancy, violence prevention, and psychological health
  • Parenting skills, early childhood education, and care
  • Family and interpersonal relationships
  • Public health functions and responsibilities
  • Management skills for family/consumer health and finance
  • Family and group dynamics

    • SLO 2 : Achieve a passing score on:
      • The physical education content test (Massachusetts Tests for Education Licensure -MTEL) in each subarea:
        • physical development and motor learning;
        • movement activities;
        • principles of physical fitness;
        • the physical education program;
        • integration of knowledge and understanding.
      • The health/family consumer sciences education content test (Massachusetts Tests for Education Licensure -MTEL) in each subarea:
        • a healthy lifestyle
        • family and emotional health
        • safety and prevention
        • resource management and community health

Goal 3 : Be able to gain employment in the field and/or gain acceptance to graduate school.

  • SLO 3 : meet the threshold in all six essential established established by Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) on the Candidate Assessment of Performance;
  • SLO 4 : attain a minimum of 300 total clock hours (minimum 150 clock hours at the elementary level and minimum 150 clock hours at the secondary level); and
  • SLO 5 : develop a professional electronic portfolio
