Primary Responsibilities:

 

The Graduate Associate position for the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion offers opportunities to critically apply theories of student cultural development and socialization and gain practical experience in project management and event production. Reappointment is dependent on department need, performance evaluation, experience, academic standing, and funding. The position performs a number of essential functions, and will work with the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) Director, the Division of Inclusion and Community Engagement (ICE), Student Affairs, various undergraduate student organizations, student leaders and established campus partnerships for collaborative projects. The GA will specifically assist with the programming and training associated with the office focused on social justice and social change; The GA will work 20 hours per week and must be available for evening and weekend programs and meetings.

 

Leadership and Advocacy: Provide leadership and advisement of programs; and assist with the recruitment, selection, training and retention of student leaders; by providing opportunities for development through the encouragement and support of educational, cultural and social programs within the community. Assist with the planning and implementation of culturally relevant and intentional learning strategies for cultural heritage months and programming by providing guidance on event management, college policies and procedures, and leadership development.  Serve as a liaison and participate in meetings and conferences with all student participants and provide ongoing supervision and training as topics arise. Responsible for hosting and facilitating regularly scheduled discussion groups that explore various political and social themes targeted to specific communities (i.e. women of color, racial/ ethnic communities, members of the international student community, the LGBTQ community, or membership of a student club). Assist in mentoring the Cultural Connection Leaders (CCL’s), encourage students to use the John Wilson Lounge; help maintain an all student event calendar on the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion webpage.

 

Programming and Outreach: Coordinate ongoing diversity related community programming, assist with the development, planning, outreach, and advertising for programming that focuses on social justice, diversity, and constituency-based outreach (i.e. students of color, LBGTQ students, and international students); assist with general educational & cultural programming, leadership retreats, and special discussion groups; support in office projects, responsible for conducting diversity-related research and assist with preparing reports and in-house publications (Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Newsletter, blogs, and social media); maintain contact with other colleges and universities to keep well-informed of leadership opportunities and current trends within multicultural affairs in higher education.

 

Secondary Responsibilities:

 

Education and Training: will cover issues such as, identity development, social change and social justice leadership. Under the direction of the Director, the Graduate Associate will assist the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with the development and implementation of diversity education programs and trainings; including but not limited to Safe Zone and Cultural Connections, participate in trainings, retreats, committees and general campus activities that are supportive of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and must be available for some departmental meetings, evening and weekend programs.

 


Fellowship Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications and Position Requirement:  

 

  • Candidates must be matriculated into a graduate program at Springfield College.

 

  • Candidates must be able to work in a macro-managed and fast-paced environment, possess the ability to adapt to changes, and must work well with people from diverse backgrounds.

 

  • Candidates of all backgrounds with a passion for multicultural affairs, a strong background in group facilitation, facilitation training and multicultural/diversity training are preferred. Student Affairs Administration Graduate Program (SAA) students are highly encouraged to apply.

 

  • Candidates must be available for evening programs and occasional weekend trainings/leadership conferences.

 

  • Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and must obtain driver safety certification through Springfield College.
