Careers

Graduates of the Athletic Counseling program are prepared to support athletes and performers through mental performance, well-being, and applied counseling skills.

Career opportunities may include:

  1. Athletic Counselor or Mental Performance Consultant
  2. Student-Athlete Development or Wellness Coordinator
  3. Athletic Department or Coaching Support Staff
  4. Performance Enhancement Specialist
  5. Youth sport, club sport, or academy consultant

Athletic Counseling graduates focus on performance enhancement, psychoeducation, and supportive counseling. They do not diagnose or treat mental health disorders unless separately licensed. Graduates are trained to recognize scope-of-practice limits and to collaborate with or refer to licensed mental health professionals as appropriate.

CMHC: Athletic Counseling concentration graduates may also pursue clinical roles following licensure, including:

  1. Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor
  2. College or university counseling center clinician
  3. Community or integrated behavioral health provider
  4. Private practice (in accordance with state licensure laws)

Internships and Field Experience

All students complete supervised practicum and internship experiences that integrate coursework with applied practice.

Athletic Counseling placements may include:

  1. College or university athletic departments
  2. High school, club, or elite sport programs
  3. Sport academies, performance centers, or wellness settings

Students focus on mental performance skills, workshops, consultation, and athlete development under approved supervision.

CMHC: Athletic Counseling concentration students complete CACREP-aligned clinical practicum and internship placements in settings such as:

  1. Community mental health agencies
  2. College counseling centers
  3. Integrated behavioral health settings

These placements include clinical supervision from licensed mental health professionals and meet licensure eligibility requirements.

Supervision and Professional Practice

All field experiences require appropriate supervision and ethical practice. Students are expected to work within their role, engage in regular supervision, and demonstrate professionalism and accountability. Program faculty provide advising and placement support throughout practicum and internship.
