Korey Boyd, PhD, assistant professor of physical education and health education, presented “Two different worlds”: Black and Latinx PETE students’ conceptualizations of culturally relevant and sustaining pedagogies” at the AIESEP Scientific Conference University of Alberta McGill University Bi-Annual Meeting in June 2021. Boyd also presented “Cracks in the narrative: Black and Latinx pre-service PE teachers in predominantly white PETE programs” at the American Education Research Association virtual annual meeting in April 2021.

Laurel Davis-Delano, PhD, professor of sociology, co-presented “White pleasure and Native struggle: Conveyance and interpretation of Native American identity” at the American Sociological Association virtual conference in August 2021. Her co-authors were Joseph P. Gone (Department of Anthropology, Harvard University, and Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, Harvard Medical School) and Sita Strother (JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc.).

Adam E. Feit, PhD, assistant professor of exercise science, co-presented the research from his dissertation, titled “Understanding the use of psychological skills and strategies in collegiate strength and conditioning” at the Association for Applied Sport Psychology virtual conference in October 2021. His co-presenters were Elizabeth M. Mullin, PhD, associate professor of exercise science and chair of the Department of Exercise Science and Athletic Training; Jasmin Hutchinson, PhD, professor of exercise science; and Brian Thompson, PhD, professor of exercise science and director of strength and conditioning.

Joan M. Giovannini, MEd, adjunct education faculty, co-presented “Grading alternatives: ‘I got a good grade, but I didn’t learn anything’: How traditional grading structures interfere with equitable outcomes” at the Center for Urban Education Community of Teaching Symposium: Teaching through an Equity Lens held at Holyoke Community College in October 2021.

Chris Hakala, PhD, professor of psychology and director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship, presented “Using Feedback to Promote Learning” at a University of Business and Technology (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) virtual faculty development day in October 2021.

Anthony C. Hill, MSW, EdD, associate professor of social work and chair of the Department of Social Work, presented professional development training to the staff of the Salvation Army Wisconsin & Upper Michigan Division at its Social Service Conference on the topic “Shine the light: The courage to raise our voices against injustice” in October 2021. He also presented the following: “Here am I Lord, send me: Equipping Christians to promote reflection, resilience, and restoration” for the North American Association of Christian Social Workers webinar in September 2021; “Creative ways of dads promoting healthy masculinity in adolescent boys” at the virtual New England Fathering Conference in September 2021; professional development trainings virtually for all employees of the western Massachusetts-based 18 Degrees social service agency on the topic “Addressing the Elephant in the Room: Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” in August and September 2021; and professional development training virtually for educators at Bowles Elementary School in Springfield, Mass., on the topic “Childhood trauma and returning to school after a pandemic” in August 2021.

Maris, PhD, assistant professor of exercise science and graduate coordinator, presented “The impact of exercise on vascular responsiveness to angiotensin II infusion as a novel method to measure cardiovascular function” at the New England American College of Sports Medicine Conference in Providence, R.I., in October 2021.

Matthew Mills, MA, ATC, and Brett Winston, PhD, ATC, both assistant professors of athletic training, co-presented “Designing and implementing problem-based learning to supplement clinical experiences” at the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions virtual conference in October 2021.

Michelle Moosbrugger, PhD, associate professor of physical education and chair of the Department of Physical Education and Health Education, co-presented “PETE/HETE Student Teachers’ Experiences Implementing an E-Cigarette Prevention Curriculum” at the virtual SHAPE America National Convention in April 2021. Elizabeth M. Mullin, PhD, associate professor of exercise science and sport studies, co-presented “Transitioning into academic leadership positions: What to know and consider” at the Association for Applied Sport Psychology virtual conference in October 2021.

Oliver J.C. Rick, PhD, assistant professor of sports management and recreation, co-presented “Outdoor recreation, COVID-19 and the post-‘Anthropause’” at the virtual Sport, Animals, and Ethics Conference in May 2021. Rick also co-presented “Chinese sport, celebrity role models, and a burgeoning middle-class social identity” at the virtual AIESEP Scientific Conference in June 2021. His co-presenter was Jack L. Li, MS, MEd, a doctoral student and teaching fellow in the physical education program. In addition, Rick virtually co-presented “Downhill BMX, digital media, and DIY urbanism” virtually at the Leisure Studies Association Annual Conference in July 2021.

Sara Scribner, PhD, assistant professor of special education, presented “Oh, now that you mention it, they were all Black: Omissions of identity beyond disability in discussions around challenging behavior and community membership” at the New England Educational Research Organization virtual conference in April 2021. At the same conference, she also co-presented “Support, not silencing: Lessons learned from a multi-year PAR study.” Scribner also co-presented “I am not a researcher:” Lessons learned from an ‘inclusive’ research study” at the Society for Disability Studies virtual conference in April 2021.

Shell, MFA, professor of theater arts, co-presented a workshop titled “Integrating actor training and improvisation into patient centered communication, cultural competencies, and rapport” at the Mayo Clinic Humanities in Medicine Symposium: Engaging Across Disciplines: Toward a Practice of Transdisciplinarity held virtually in September and October 2021.

Brian Thompson, PhD, professor of exercise science and director of strength and conditioning, presented “How to continue to develop as a strength coach at any level” at the virtual National Strength and Conditioning Association virtual Connecticut State Clinic in June 2021. Thompson also presented “Developing a year-long strength training program for wrestling” at the National Wrestling Coaches Association virtual conference in July 2021.

Joseph Wronka, PhD, professor of social work, presented “Supporting victims of terrorism by reviewing the destructive effects and consequences of violence in society” at the Association to Defend Victims of Terrorism virtual conference to commemorate the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism in August 2021. Also in August, Wronka served on a panel at a virtual event, The Kashmiri Diaspora, to form the “Mission Kashmir” Platform for High Diplomacy to commemorate Aug. 5 as the International Day of Lockdown Territories. Wronka also presented “Constitutional fiat as a means to promote self-determination in the Kashmir region: An educated layperson’s approach” during the 47th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council COVID-19 Politics on Kashmir’s Self-Determination event.

Sofija Zagarins, PhD, associate professor of public health, and Megan Harvey, PhD, assistant professor of health science, co-presented “The association between established diet quality indices and gestational weight gain in Hispanic women” at the joint annual meetings of the Society for Epidemiologic Research and the Society for Pediatric and Perinatal Epidemiologic Research in San Diego, Calif., in June 2021. At the same conference, Harvey and Zagarins co-presented “The association between diet quality indices and gestational age and birth weight among Latinas.”
