Art Therapy Learning Outcomes

Goal 1 : Demonstrates global mastery of skills in art, the techniques of basic media properties, the applications of materials using art therapy concepts, and the aesthetic presentation of artwork. 

  • SLO 1 : Students will develop proficiency in skills in visual arts, including but not limited to drawing, design, painting, and three-dimensional applications.
  • SLO 2 : Students will have a foundational understanding of how to apply artmaking concepts used in art therapy.
  • SLO 3 : Students will participate in the aesthetic exhibit of artwork.

Goal 2 : Demonstrates preprofessional skills that include ethical principles of clinical practice demonstrating preparation for graduate training. 

  • SLO 4 : Students will understand how art therapists apply ethical principles.
  • SLO 5 :  Students will develop interpersonal skills conducive to the basic standards of practice in therapy.
  • SLO 6 : Students will participate in fieldwork or practicum experiences in order to learn how methods are applied to specific client experiences by professional art therapists. 

Goal 3 : Develops a basic historic understanding of the psychological, arts-based theoretical foundations, and emerging concepts of art therapy, demonstrating preparation for graduate training. 

  • SLO 7 : Students will learn the historical development and the current trends in psychology and in art therapy.
  • SLO 8 : Students will learn how artmaking can benefit people from across the lifespan. 
  • SLO 9 : Students will learn how to creatively adapt materials to specific population needs. 

Goal 4 : Demonstrates an understanding of how art therapists include multiculturalism, diversity and inclusion in practice and in research. 

  • SLO 10 : Students will learn foundational understanding of multicultural awareness art therapists encounter in practice. 
  • SLO 11 : Students will learn skills in critical thinking, and basic research development, demonstrating preparation for graduate training.
