Meet Remy: Springfield College’s Comfort Dog

About Remy
Remy, a Silver Labrador, was born November 7, 2023. Before coming to Springfield College, he was raised at Dame Dogs Labradors in Rhode Island. Through the generosity of breeder Jocelyn Dame, owner of Dame Dogs Labradors, Remy was donated to Springfield College. Dame believes in comfort dog programs and has donated some of her dogs to other police departments.

Remy is a member of the Department of Public Safety. His handler is Chief Joseph Tiraboschi. Fun fact: Remy’s brother, Louie, is a comfort dog at the Natick (Mass.) Fire Department!

Remy's Mission

Training to be a certified comfort dog, Remy's mission is to provide affection, comfort, and emotional support to students, faculty, and staff in need. Through his calm presence, gentle nature, and loving attention, Remy can help reduce stress and anxiety while boosting feelings of happiness and well-being.

Whether visiting a student, providing playful distraction to someone grieving, or offering calming nudges to those experiencing trauma, Remy's mission is to bring light to dark times through the unconditional love that only a dog can give. With patience, kindness, and his always-wagging tail, Remy hopes to make a positive difference in as many lives as possible at Springfield College and beyond.

Learning How to Be the Best Comfort Dog

Remy is currently undergoing advanced obedience training at K9 & Pets Dog Training in East Longmeadow, Mass. This highly experienced training facility is providing Remy with the skills he needs to become an exceptional comfort dog for Springfield College.

So far, Remy has completed several obedience classes and is learning how to follow commands without the guidance of a leash and honing his attention skills by tuning out distractions and remaining keenly focused on his handler.

Remy is being specially trained to interact with people of all ages in various settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, schools, disaster areas, and wherever else his services can provide solace. His warm, loving companionship is meant to uplift spirits, put smiles on faces, and create moments of joy even in difficult circumstances. In addition to his campus work, Remy has visited a local elderly residence complex, high school classrooms, district attorney’s office, and other evets off campus.

Benefits of a Comfort Dog
As an obedience-trained comfort dog, Remy will offer significant benefits to the Springfield College community, including:

  • Emotional support and stress relief
  • Creating a positive atmosphere just by his presence
  • Opportunities for education about comfort animals

Where Is Remy When Not Working?

Remy lives with Chief Tiraboschi and his family! This arrangement allows Remy to take breaks from his working duties and simply enjoy being a beloved pet. One of his greatest joys is playing in the backyard, chasing after soccer balls and tennis balls. When he's not hard at work, Remy loves running freely and bringing out his playful side in the safety of the family's yard.

The “Dos and Don’ts” When Around Remy
As Remy continues his training journey, we kindly ask for your cooperation in ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for all. Please follow these guidelines.

  1. Sit Command: When approaching Remy, please avoid petting or engaging with him until he has been instructed to sit by his handler. This reinforces good behavior and prevents him from jumping on individuals.
  2. No Treats!: While we understand the temptation to give Remy a treat, we kindly ask that you not feed him without the handler's approval. We have a carefully designed diet plan and approved treats to ensure his health and well-being.
  3. Playtime Etiquette: Remy is a playful pup who loves to explore and engage with his surroundings! If he initiates play, his handler will provide appropriate toys for him to chew on and interact with. This keeps him from inadvertently chewing on shoes or other personal belongings.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in helping Remy learn proper behavior. If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to approach Remy's handler.

Remy’s Favorite Things!

  • Remy loves to run and play, chasing after leaves, birds, and anything that catches his eye
  • During his many walks, you'll find him joyfully exploring the sights and sounds around him
  • Don't worry if he approaches you with a wagging tail, eager for a game of fetch or a belly rub
  • He adores being petted around his ears and will gladly snuggle up next to you for a warm embrace
