Hip-Hop for Social Change Virtual Summit | Springfield College
The Springfield College Office of Multicultural Affairs team, in collaboration with other partners, presents the

Hip-Hop for Social Change Virtual Summit

The purpose of this two-day summit is to provide a background, general understanding, and experience in the study of hip-hop as a field of academic inquiry, and to address the new realities of those involved in and impacted by the culture. This summit will:

  • Educate our community on topics related to social justice, identity, power, privilege, positionality, and radical community care.
  • Focus on classism, racism and white supremacy, sexism, and heteronormativity.
  • Explore the multiple sociocultural factors that influence hip-hop culture.

The Hip-Hop for Social Change Virtual Summit will be held Friday April 16 - Saturday April 17, 2021. Registration is required to attend the sessions.

No prior knowledge is required to engage in and benefit from our programming. We believe that education should be widely accessible to all, and we welcome members of any and all communities to register for our programming.

Please register in order to attend the sessions

What to Expect at the Hip-Hop Summit

Presenters and participants will discuss:

  • Why do some artists “get further ahead” than others?
  • How does hip-hop culture offer platforms for expression and healing through one’s own narrative?
  • How can hip-hop performers speak their truths to power while educating their community about social change, justice, and equity?
  • What factors shape how hip-hop culture is supported or destroyed?

Participants will learn how:

  • To study and redefine social responsibility and move to critical activism.
  • To change economic and social situations that support the oppression of individuals and groups.
  • To critically examine the relationship between hip-hop culture and the evolution and promotion of hip-hop in education.
  • To challenge old notions, provide more access, and take social responsibility to be culturally responsive for historically excluded groups.
