Springfield College Hosts U.S. Women’s Soccer Legend Kristine Lilly and Author on the History of U.S. Women’s Soccer Jeffrey Gerson

The Springfield College School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation welcomed U.S. women’s soccer legend Kristine Lilly, and University of Massachusetts Lowell Associate Professor of Political Science Jeffrey Gerson to campus to discuss the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team and the Fight for Gender Equity, on Wednesday, March 6.
For more than 90 minutes, Lilly and Gerson discussed the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team fight for gender equity, and how Lilly and her teammates helped close the gender equality gap in women's and men's athletics.
Lilly is one of the most decorated and accomplished female soccer players in the world. Retiring in 2011 as the all-time appearance leader in international competition, she has gone on to discuss the struggle of equality in women’s soccer from 1970 to the present time. Lilly is second on the all-time goals scored list for the U.S. team with 130. She is the only woman to play in five FIFA Women’s World Cup competitions. She earned gold and silver medals for Olympic competition in soccer.
Gerson is an authority on the history of U.S. women’s soccer having written an oral history of the fight for gender equity in U.S. women’s soccer. He has made numerous presentations focused on the fight for gender equity in athletics.
