Springfield College Occupational Therapy Class of 2020
I pledge to uphold the following ideals in my profession as an occupational therapist, both as a student and as a future practitioner:
1. …to see my client as my equal and fellow human and treat them compassionately and with empathetic care.
2. …to respect the client’s dignity, autonomy, and humanity, as well as respecting the same for families and those that love and care for the client.
3. …to be open to learning and new experiences, striving to provide the most up-to-date and effective care.
4. …to make ethically justifiable and caring decisions that are respectful of the client’s desires, while staying true to the values that make me an occupational therapist.
5. …to advocate for my clients and provide them with the best care possible, putting their needs first.
6. …to understand and collaborate with other disciplines in the workplace and to advocate and give back to occupational therapy practice.
7. …to use my clinical reasoning to integrate the values of each client, considering them holistically as unique individuals deserving of client centered care.
8. …to respect and consider the values and moral foundations of my clients and family members, and of team members.
9. …to therapeutically promote education, information, and privacy.
10. …to leave my personal life outside of practice and to be present in my practice.
11. …to advocate on my clients’ behalf and for their wellbeing and provide them a quality of care that supports their health, well-being, and choices.
12. …to treat each client as a unique human being with separate values, beliefs, and goals, treating the person, not the illness.
