Current Students
Outstanding current Springfield College students who are rising sophomores (that is, early-career students who will have approximately 40 or fewer credits by the end of the summer after their first undergraduate year) are invited to apply for admission to the Honors Program early in the spring semester. Accepted students will be among the approximately 30 students selected to join the fall cohort.
Applications from current students are accepted between Jan. 15 and Feb. 15 via the application link below.
Because completing the curriculum for the Honors Program requires careful planning, it may be difficult for students in some majors (e.g., athletic training, health science pre-physician assistant, health science pre-physical therapy, education licensure majors, and 3+2 or 3+3 programs) to join the Honors Program unless they began their majors with college credit. Interested students from these majors should email honors@springfield.edu to set up an appointment for personalized advising to see if they can fulfill the curriculum requirements in their remaining time at the College. Please consult the program requirements.
To apply to the Honors Program, eligible current students should:
● Identify Springfield College faculty or staff member who is familiar with them as a learner, who is willing to write them a letter of recommendation (LOR). Students will provide the recommender’s name on the online application form. (Students: Click here for advice about asking someone to write a you a letter of recommendation. Faculty and staff: After a student submits their application, you will receive emailed instructions from the Honors Program about submitting your letter as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf file directly to honors@springfield.edu by March 1.)
● Prepare a short response to the following prompt:
○ In about 150 words, characterize the qualities you would hope to find in the typical Springfield College Honors Program class, professor, and student.
● Prepare short response to the following prompt:
○ In about 150 words, tell us about a text (a novel, memoir or other nonfiction work, graphic novel, poem, etc.) that you haven’t ever studied in a classroom setting but that you would recommend to someone to read. Why would you recommend it?
● Write an original essay responding to the following prompt:
○ In about 600 words, tell us about a subject, other than the discipline in which you plan to major, about which you enjoy learning. Share a story about you that illustrates your excitement to learn about that subject. How does your enthusiasm show itself, and how have you pursued your learning interests? Note: If you are undecided on a major, you may write about any learning interest. (*Please save your essay as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf file, then upload the file.)
● Select a written project (approximately 1,000-1,500 words, authored by the student for a course at Springfield College; no group projects, please) that represents their academic achievement and potential. (*Please ensure your project is saved as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf file.)
We regret that in most cases, joining the Honors Program is not feasible for students with more than 50 earned credit hours by the end of their first undergraduate summer; we invite you to consult with the Honors Program director about your particular situation. Further, at this time, the program is not available to regional and online students. However, many Honors Program events are open to the entire College, and we hope to see outstanding students and life-long learners there.
