Springfield College Radio Station
From Hobby to Passion: Logan Briggs’ “Fun, Fear and Facilitation” Podcast

Entering Springfield College as a Psychology major, I already had my mind set on becoming a school counselor and enrolling in the School Counseling master’s program here at Springfield. In addition, I had been working on my high school ropes course and was very interested in programs at East Campus. During my first week of college, I attended Pre-Camp at East Campus where I met one of the program leaders, Reese Merritt ’25

Reese was also at the time the president of the college’s radio station (WSCB-FM 89.9) and Birthplace Studios podcast club. The following week at the campus club fair, I carefully browsed through my options of clubs to join. Interestingly enough, the clubs I am a part of now, including Birthplace Studios, were not a part of the list of clubs I signed up for that day.

A few weeks passed and I kept thinking about the pitch Reese gave me for the club: You can make a podcast about anything. I was super passionate about ropes courses and adventure education, so I decided to give it a go. Reese was super helpful and helped me learn all the equipment.

A year-and-a-half later, my podcast, called “Fun, Fear, and Facilitation,” is nearing its 40th episode. I have had numerous guests, including student leaders, facilitators, and teachers I have worked with in the past, President Mary-Beth Cooper, and even a therapist and mental performance coach I met at my summer camp (which later landed me a part-time job at her company).

Fun, Fear, and Facilitation is an adventure education podcast that explores challenge course facilitation, adventure education, and facilitator mental health through the lens of a student leader. The podcast is aimed at emerging leaders and helps facilitators learn how to have tough conversations and reflect on experiences, while also taking risks and having fun.

Being able to interview people like President Cooper was super awesome and has opened my mind to many layers of leadership. Also being able to talk about risk management, planning a program, and facilitator mental health, has given me the opportunity to share my experiences as well as continue to grow as facilitator and student leader.

For me that was the whole picture. I was just a Psychology student using this podcast club as an outlet to highlight my passion for adventure education. I never expected I would fall in love with student media. In spring 2025, I applied for an E-board position and was chosen to be vice president of WSCB and Birthplace Studios.

In this role, I got to dive deeper into the technical side of things, such as programming radio shows and music, recording short audio transitions to air on the station in between songs and programs, and teaching others how to use equipment. I continued to challenge myself and was selected to be a part of the Panini Hoophall Classic 2026 media team covering the annual high school basketball tournament held on campus. I got to see a whole different side of journalism.

What started as a little hobby has turned into a full passion for media and journalism. It hasn't all been easy though. Unlike most students in the media clubs, I am not a Communications/Sports Journalism (COSJ) major, so I have not taken much of the coursework that sets you up for success doing the more technical side of media.

Now as president of WSCB and Birthplace Studios this semester, I get to continue to learn new things, while also attempting to get even more non-COSJ majors involved in the club.

This has been a new and unexpected journey, but one of the most rewarding in my life. Although I am unsure if I will continue this post-graduation, I am so happy to be able to have something like this available. Having the chance to lead a media club, specifically as someone not in COSJ, means a lot to me, and I take this opportunity very seriously.

My podcast episodes air each Thursday afternoon at 1:00 PM on WSCB-FM and are available on demand on Spotify, Soundcloud, and Apple Podcasts. Take a listen!

My message to students: The awesome thing about the club is that the commitment is up to you. You can create a podcast about anything, as long as it is appropriate. No experience needed. We will train you and help you create a top-notch podcast. It doesn't happen overnight. If you listen to my first episode and then my 30th, you would notice the difference. You can choose to record once a week, twice a month, twice a semester, etc. We will work with your schedule.

I highly recommend anyone who is interested in learning more about podcasting to email birthplacestudios.pocasts@gmail.com, or email our advisor, Jeremy Menard, at jmenard@springfield.edu for more information.
