Health Education/Family & Consumer Science Program Outcomes

Goal 1 : Graduates will be able to demonstrate and apply knowledge of: curriculum, planning and assessment; teaching all students; family and community engagement; professional culture.

  • SLO 1 : Demonstrate proficiency in quality (as measured with the DESE-provided rubric) in each of the six essential elements (within DESE Standards I, II, III & IV):
    • designing and implementing well-structured lessons with measurable objectives that align with state and national standards;
    • making adjustments to practices based on informal or formal assessment results;
    • meeting diverse needs by using inclusive strategies;
    • designing and implementing a safe learning environment;
    • setting high expectations through instruction, participant engagement, and assessment in all three learning domains;
    • reflecting regularly on teaching, learning, and interactions with others.

Goal 2 : Graduates will be able to demonstrate content knowledge in health, and family and consumer sciences.

  • SLO 2 : Achieve a passing score on the health/family & consumer science education content test (Massachusetts Tests for Education Licensure -MTEL) in each subarea:
    • a healthy lifestyle
    • family and emotional health
    • safety and prevention
    • resource management and community health
    • (MA DESE MTEL Health/Family & Consumer Science Content subareas)

Goal 3 : Graduates will be able to demonstrate skills necessary to gain employment in the field and/or gain acceptance to graduate school.

  • SLO 3 : Meet the threshold in all six essential elements established by Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) on the Candidate Assessment of Performance;

  • SLO 4 : Develop a professional electronic portfolio with evidence of pedagogical skills, content knowledge, and teaching experience.
