Embrace Your Creativity.
The Art and Graphic Design major at Springfield College provides students with a strong foundation in creative practice, critical thinking, visual communication, and emerging technologies. Through hands-on learning and interdisciplinary exploration, students develop technical skills, creative confidence, and professional portfolios that prepare them for careers in the arts, design, community engagement, and graduate study. Students work closely with faculty mentors while exploring a variety of artistic and design disciplines in a collaborative and innovative environment.
Program Concentrations
Once the core requirements of the major have been completed, students may choose from the following concentrations:
General Art and Graphic Design Concentration
The General Art and Graphic Design concentration allows students to build broad creative and technical skills while exploring multiple artistic disciplines. Within this concentration, students may pursue one of the following focuses:
- Studio Arts Focus: Explore introductory and advanced coursework in drawing, painting, ceramics, photography, sculpture, and mixed media. Students are encouraged to experiment, take creative risks, and develop a strong artistic foundation for advanced study or professional practice.
- Design Focus: Develop skills in graphic design, web design, multimedia, motion graphics, and environmental design while working with industry-standard software and emerging technologies. Students graduate with professional portfolios and versatile creative skills for careers in the design industry.
Pre-Art Therapy Concentration
The Pre-Art Therapy concentration combines visual arts, psychology, and community engagement to prepare students for graduate study in art therapy and related helping professions. Students complete coursework in studio art, psychology, and art therapy while gaining hands-on experience through a practicum in a community or pre-clinical setting.
Through this interdisciplinary curriculum, students develop foundational knowledge in creative practice, psychological theory, wellness, and therapeutic approaches while learning how art can support healing, communication, and community well-being.
A Clear Path from Pre-Art Therapy to Art Therapy/Counseling
Students who are accepted into the Art and Graphic Design: Pre-Art Therapy Concentration will receive direct entry into our MEd/MS in Art Therapy/Counseling.
In order to be eligible students must be in good standing with a cumulative and prerequisite coursework GPA of 3.0 or better. All prerequisites must be complete prior to beginning the graduate portion of the program. An interview may be requested.
