Physical Education Facilities
Unlike many competitors, we have a diverse array of gymnasiums and facilities that are used for teaching and learning. In all of these spaces, students engage in hands-on experience through in-class instruction and peer teaching. Gaining experience in a variety of environments is crucial as students prepare for practicum and careers in physical education and athletics.
Kresge Gymnasium
Physical education and dual physical education and health/family and consumer science students take PEPC 180: Educational Gymnastics in the newly renovated, spacious gymnastics center.
Dana Gymnasium
Dana Gymnasium is an air-conditioned instructional facility with Connor Neo-Shock maple wood floor. It contains teaching stations for such skill courses as basketball, volleyball, and racket sports. In an adjacent space, there are eight handball/racquetball courts with maple wood floors also used for learning to teach net/wall games.
Blake Arena
The 2,000-seat Blake Arena, which features the James Naismith Court, comes alive when men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, gymnastics teams, as well as the wrestling team, take on New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference and non conference opponents. Physical education majors peer teach and participate in volleyball, striking games, and additional skill courses in the arena.
Field House
The 93,820-square-foot Field House incorporates a six-lane running track, four multipurpose courts, each with the ability to be closed off by a netting system, locker rooms, strength and conditioning facilities, storage, concessions, and rest-rooms. On Fridays, physical education majors can be found teaching lessons for local homeschooled children on these courts!
Dance Spaces
Students participate in dance lessons and learn dance pedagogy in the dedicated dance facility.
Linkletter Natatorium
The Art Linkletter Natatorium is a six-lane, 50-meter pool, with two one-meter and two three-meter diving boards. The water depth ranges from four to 12 and a half feet. Physical education, movement and sport studies, and physical education and health/family consumer science majors complete a swimming course of their choice. One option is Adapted Aquatics with students gaining hands-on experience by teaching community members aquatics skills.
Outdoor Fields
Students enjoy taking courses outside on the Irv Schmid Sports Complex. The outdoor track is the site for a Track and Field course, and the outdoor tennis courts house the Racket Sports: Net and Wall Games course in optimal weather.
East Campus
East Campus Outdoor Learning Center is another differentiator, and our students take a minimum of 2 courses there where they build outdoor skills and learn to teach with an adventure education and experiential education framework.
