Alumnus’ Estate Gift Impacts Students and Athletic Facility | Springfield College
Irv Schmid Athletic Facility

Last January, the Springfield College community was saddened to learn of the passing of Alan “Dinty” Moore ’50. Since that time, the College has been informed that Moore left two important gifts from his estate to his alma mater: a $126,000 gift to his endowed scholarship, the Alan & Elizabeth Moore Scholarship, and a $50,000 gift for the Irv Schmid Sports Complex.

“Dinty is a prime example of a Springfield College student-athlete having a transformative experience and developing a relationship with this institution that only strengthened over the decades. I am thankful for Dinty’s generosity that I know will help our future student-athletes have a first-class experience,” said Craig Poisson, executive director of athletics.

Moore was a passionate advocate of Springfield College and the men’s soccer team. In 2007, he made his first major gift to Springfield College as part of the Irv Schmid Challenge, which raised funds that were used to create the Irv Schmid Sports Complex. As part of his gift, he recognized Irv and Jacque Schmid, Vic Kodis ’35, and Axel Forslund ’29 with a plaque on the door of the men’s soccer office.

Upon making the gift, Moore declared, “I never thought I would be able to do this for my alma mater!”

As a student, Moore played on the soccer team and led them to the 1947 national championship. He later served as head soccer and lacrosse coach at the University of North Carolina. He became a faculty member at the University of Florida and founded its soccer club, which he coached for four decades and registered a 503-220-110 record.

In 2005, Moore was inducted into the Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame.

While Springfield College will miss Moore’s unwavering passion, his legacy will continue to impact the College and students and student-athletes for years to come.
