Campus Inclusion Climate Survey: Faculty & Staff General Campus Experiences

Employees responded to multiple questions that asked them to rate to what extent they agree or disagree with statements about the overall climate on our campus. Below is an overview of six of these items.

Key Findings

  • Employees generally highly agreed that they feel safe on campus.
  • There was also agreement that “there is a great sense of belonging” on campus, but almost a quarter of employees were neutral in their response to this question.
  • Employees presented less agreement with the statement “our campus is diverse but not inclusive,” and somewhat more agreement with the statement “our campus is inclusive but not diverse.” However, both administrators overall and BIPOC employees were less likely to agree with this statement than the other groups.
  • Employees generally agree that “Multiculturalism is a core value of our institution's mission,” but faculty overall and BIPOC employees specifically were less likely to agree with this statement than the other groups.
  • Whereas 77% of employees disagreed or strongly disagreed with the statement, “This is a hostile working environment,” BIPOC employees were less likely to disagree with this statement than the other groups.

Where averages are provided for BIPOC employees, BIPOC refers to employees who selected African American/Black, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, Indigenous/Native American, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and/or Multiracial as one or more responses to “What is your race/ethnicity?”

Employee experiences of bias

Employees were asked to report on their own experiences of bias on campus via the question, “I have experienced microaggressions in my department/division/unit.” Whereas the majority of respondents did not agree with this statement, a concerning 23.6% (n = 78) did agree and 8.8% (n = 29) strongly agreed. Agreement numbers were more pronounced when looking specifically at BIPOC employees.

Furthermore, 10.5% (n = 48 out of 456) of all employees noted that they considered leaving the institution due to a feeling of not belonging. Within BIPOC employees in particular, this number was slightly lower (n = 12 out of 165; 7.3%).
