There’s a special buzz every year when the Hoophall Classic comes back to the Birthplace of Basketball.  It’s even more special when alumni return to work the tournament, and this year is no exception with COSJ alum Tarek Fattal ‘14, Sports Reporter at SBLive Sports, covering the CA teams. Best part? His wife and fellow COSJ alum Brianna Hill Fattal ‘15 also made the trip from CA with their 5-month old daughter Ajla.

Alumni Spotlight....Welcome Home to Sport Management alumni Grady Short '23 and Kyle DeBlasiis '23 who returned to campus to attend the 2024 Spalding Hoophall Classic. Both spent many hours during their student days working this event.

"The Hoophall Classic really helped me develop my leadership skills and it prepared me for my professional career because you are getting real hands-on experience at a major event. It's an experience you only get at Springfield College," explained Kyle who is a Marketing Coordinator with Siena Athletics.

"Being a part of the Sport Management program and getting the experience working at Hoophall was so important to my growth, and I am so thankful for the opportunity. It's so exciting to come back and see how great the experience for this year's students continues to be for them," added Grady, who is a Sponsorship Coordinator at Spartan.

It was wonderful to see Kyle and Grady back on Alden Street!

During the Spalding Hoophall Classic at Blake Arena, current students used the opportunity to network with the very strong Springfield College alumni network.

At left, Danny Priest '21 had a chance to meet Class of 2025 Communications/Sports Journalism major Braedan Shea. Shea is one of this year's COSJ student-leaders creating content for the Hoophall Classic Springfield Student newspaper special edition that comes out on the final day of the event. It was Priest, along with fellow alum Kris Rhim '21, who assisted in creating the very first Hoophall Classic special edition Springfield Student newspaper back in 2020.

“Prior to that special edition newspaper, COSJ majors only had opportunities to cover Hoophall as freelancers for news outlets,” explained Priest. “The partnership with the Hall of Fame helped us cover it as student journalists. To see that tradition carry on with our current students means so much, because it’s the experiences you receive as students at events like the Hoophall Classic that really make Springfield College unique.”

Springfield College Communications/Sports Journalism graduate Danny Priest ’21 recently visited campus during the 2024 Spalding Hoophall Classic at Blake Arena. Priest is currently a member of the digital content team for 3STEP Sports in Andover, Mass., a youth sports club and events operator, with more than 2,500 events annually. 3STEP Sports provides services to more than one million athletes, representing nine different sports.

Priest’s primary focus is within 3STEP’s football vertical, and he runs social media for the UCReport, college football’s premier scouting database. Through their exclusive camps and events, they provide clients with verified testing data and measurables, as well as HD quality camp cutups of all reps taken. All data and events are proprietary.

The skills that Priest developed in writing, reporting, and sourcing as a COSJ major have assisted in his development and success with 3STEP Sports.

“My time at Springfield College was great, and I did learn so many skills I am using every day at 3STEP,” explained Priest. “I learned it’s important to know who you are talking to, and that taught me how crucial it is to build strong relationships. People will always remember the impact you had on them. So many people at Springfield helped me in my journey, and I have been able to build those strong relationships with faculty, staff, alumni and current students. The relationship building process is something that I have carried into the professional world.”

Congratulations to Criminal Justice alum Nick “Rocky” Monteleone ‘21 who has been nominated for Amateur Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter of the year. Nick was a student-athlete on the wrestling team at Springfield College, and competes out of his home state of New Jersey.

Megan McGloin '20 has joined the Inside Sales staff at BSE Global.

David DeNitto '13 has taken on the role of Director of Sales at Ripken Baseball & Factory Athletics.

Stephanie Lyons '22, G'24 has accepted a position with MassMutual as a Corporate Hospitality Coordinator.

Hira Byrne Paulin '12, G'13 was a recent guest on the podcast "20 Years Done", hosted by Air Force Veteran and Veteran Advocate Chris McGhee, Esq.  As a certified rehabilitation counselor and military spouse, Hira discussed empowering people with disabilities from all walks of life, veteran or otherwise.  Hira's approach reframes how we see disabilities, advocating for a society that's more accommodating and less stigmatizing.

Daniel Curren '23 did his first ever live hit as a professional journalist for WBNG-TV 12 (Binghamton, NY) earlier this month. Daniel is a graduate of Springfield College's Communications and Sports Journalism program.

Being a Springfield College student is an incredible experience.

The SC alumni network runs deep, and the power of connections was displayed in early January at the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Coaches Conference in Orlando, FL with many alums presenting, volunteering, and finding time to engage and reunite!

At Springfield College, we teach our students about the value of building your professional network while you’re here so you can lean on that support once you leave Alden Street. Our Athletic Training students understood the assignment, and leaned in and engaged with many alumni and AT professionals in early January at the Eastern Athletic Trainers' Association Conference. There's no doubt that experience will positively impact both the students and alums long after the conference!

Springfield College West Coast alumni, current and past parents, current and prospective students gathered in Costa Mesa, CA on January 13 for a social and then to cheer on our men's volleyball team as they played Vanguard University. It was a great night of engagement and fellowship so many miles from Alden Street!

Thank you to all who attended!

Springfield College Alumni Spotlight - Meet Cameron Borges '23. Cam is one of those people who truly made the most of his Springfield College experience. During his student days, Cam could be found on the football field, serving Student Government and SALT, founding the Minds in Motion club, attending alumni and student networking events and learning the ins and outs of the sport management field through various volunteer and internship experiences. All of these experiences and Cam's hard work led him to a position with Legends, as an Account Executive at the Dallas Cowboys. Recently, Cam announced he is headed back to Massachusetts as the Director of Football Operations at the College of the Holy Cross.

"Springfield College holds a special place in my heart as a transformative environment where I've grown into the person I am today. My journey on Alden Street was marked by moments of success, failure and invaluable lessons that shaped me as a young man. The unwavering support from faculty, staff, alumni and dear friends has been instrumental in my journey. Beyond the physical campus, the relationships forged at Springfield are enduring, becoming connections that will last a lifetime. I am profoundly grateful for my Springfield College experience and it will always be a place I consider home," shared Borges.

Therapeutic Recreation/Child Life alumna Michelle O’Hara, G’10, is kicking off 2024 with a new job, and a new title, at a new hospital. Michelle has been named the Director of Child Life at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital in New York, NY!

When you ask our current students what sets Springfield College apart, they will almost always respond by saying it’s the people that make this such a special place. The best part is that it doesn't change when you graduate and become an alum. Thank you to our alumni who attended our New Haven event at East Rock Brewing for making any room feel like home as long as there are Springfield College people in it.

Congratulations to the 1994 Springfield College NCAA Championship Men's Lacrosse team who were inducted into the Western MA Lacrosse Hall of Fame on January 20.

"My time playing lacrosse at Springfield College was an incredible journey. As a teacher and coach, I always reference the importance of how a team comes together and how the bond can be the difference in winning or losing. Talent will bring you only so far! The 1994 team was a 'team' starting with the coaches. We truly loved each other and didn’t care who got the credit. I think about it often now that my boys are playing lacrosse for Springfield College as well," expressed Nick Savastano '95.

"This team was full of winners. Not just on the field but in life as husbands, parents and in the work field. A lot of big personalities and really fun to coach. The National Championship was icing on the cake. I have formed life-long relationships with many of the players. I was very proud to be their coach, along with assistant coaches Jim Nagle, G'94, Randy Fraser '90, and Cort Kim, G'96. They are incredible coaches, but more importantly, incredible human beings," stated Head Coach Keith Bugbee, G'84.

Springfield College Alumni Spotlight - Young Alumna Sabrina Moore '23 is a graduate student at New York University. A history major during her days at SC, Sabrina is currently an Archive Intern at the American Museum of Natural History's Vertebrate Paleontology Department as part of an Institute of Museum and Library Services funded project.

"Springfield College has prepared me for this opportunity at the American Museum of Natural History by being the first place in which I was able to work in an archive and learn first hand some of the beauties and struggles of being an archivist. Working with people like Jeff Monseau, the head archivist for the college, for almost four years as an undergraduate solidified my desire to work in the archival field. Springfield College to me means an everlasting community. I have met amazing people at SC and I hope to continue these connections for years to come."

Sabrina Moore we are excited to see what your future holds!

From Alden Street to Binghamton, NY, Physical Education and Athletic Administration alumna Raychel Setless Reilly '10, G'16, is committed to living the humanics philosophy personally, and in her professional career. We look forward to seeing the many ways Raychel makes a positive impact on her community as the Chief Operating Officer at the Binghamton Jewish Community Center!

Joe Baia '11 currently is the Senior Manager for Health, Wellness and Ergonomic Safety at Delta Airlines.

Christopher Bush '10 has been promoted to Director, Client Retention with the Washington Nationals.

Michael Case '15 has started a new position as Territory Sales Manager at Stryker.

At January's Springfield College Maroon Club Student Athlete Luncheon, Kristin Trombley DeFosse '91 and Maria D'Agostino Crawford '91 both had daughters that were honored. Katherine DeFosse, class of 2027, Women's Track & Field and Megan Crawford, class of 2024, Women's Diving were recognized for their recent successes on the track and in the pool.

Dan Lofgren '09 has started a new position as Practice Administrator at Middlesex Gastroenterology Associates.

Garrett Ossolinski '21, G'23, is a Physician Assistant at Columbia Orthopedics, working with a doctor who specializes in hip and knee reconstruction.

Tim Murphy '78, G'79, Harvard University's Head Football Coach, announced his retirement after 30 years in the position. Murphy leaves the Crimson as the all-time winningest coach in Ivy League and school history.

Molly Keays '17, G'19, has been recognized as a 2024 National Recreation and Park Association 30 under 30 recipient. Keays is the Director of Parks and Recreation for the Town of South Windsor (CT).

From the Springfield Republican 1/11/24 (Don Treeger):

College-bound seniors from Springfield's Renaissance School showed off their success recently during a march from Springfield Symphony Hall to the U.S. Post Office. There, the students mailed personalized thank you letters as part of College March, a tradition that celebrates determination, gratitude and pursuit of higher education. The students mail letters they've written that express appreciation to those who have inspired their college dreams, guided them through the college planning process, and played instrumental roles in their educational journey. "The College March is a powerful embodiment of our commitment to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to pursue higher education," said Renaissance School Principal Derek Wright '14. "It symbolizes the collective effort of our seniors and the broader community in fostering a vision of limitless possibilities."
