On Sunday, September 28, the Springfield College community was treated to a special viewing of the film "Shattered Ice." Thank you so much to Jake Miskin '13, the film's writer & producer, and Dan Sheldon '12, producer, for your decade long journey in creating this film and being with us to share your experiences. A riveting film, the story centers on a small-town New England teenage hockey player's attempt to navigate high school life when his best friend dies by suicide.

Key takeaways: Please know you are never alone. There are many resources available at Springfield College and elsewhere. Be kind as you never know what someone else may be going through. Don't be afraid to share your struggles with others. Be sure to take time for yourself, outside of your sport, studies, extra curricular activities.

Diane Welch Maillet '98, G'03, writes:

At a time when I was hearing the heartbreaking news of losing a Springfield College classmate far too young to cancer, I was also reminded of the gift this school continues to give - the people. Springfield College recently brought together these amazing women and their families. At one point, one of the minis asked, "Why did that Springfield girl drive so far just to come to this cookout?" Because life is short. Because these moments matter and we're lucky for times like these.

Molly Keays '17, G'19, Director of Parks & Recreation, South Windsor, Conn. and Chris Nunes '94, G'95, Chief Operating Officer of The Woodlands Township in Texas, recently teamed up to present "Show Up and Show Off: Making Your Agency's Story Stand Out" at this year's National Recreation and Park Association Conference.

Park and Recreation professionals traditionally have relied on emotional appeals to justify services and spending. Messaging must evolve to address the priorities and needs of decision makers to ensure continued support for park and recreation initiatives. Effectively telling your agency's story is essential in today's competitive landscape for building strong relationships with stakeholders, participants and the community.

Thank you to Ed Matteo '89 for sending in the following update regarding men's rugby and family weekend.

On Friday, October 3, the Springfield College Men’s Rugby team hosted Trinity College in an early-season matchup of two Division III powerhouses. Springfield entered the game ranked #16 in the nation, while Trinity, a former #20 nationally-ranked program, looks to climb back into the top tier.

This contest carried extra meaning for Springfield alumni. Both head coaches are proud Springfield College graduates. Springfield’s head coach, Luke Salls ’21, will face off against Trinity’s head coach, Ed Matteo ’89. The two share a unique connection: Matteo, who helped restart the Springfield Rugby program in 1986 and went on to win the 1988 New England Division II Championship as a player and program vice president, once coached a young Salls in high school. In fact, Salls captained Matteo’s 2017 Simsbury High School rugby team before going on to play and coach at Springfield.

The game was more than just a rugby match—it was a showcase of Springfield College’s legacy in building leaders, forging lifelong connections, and fueling the growth of the sport. With two of the top Division III programs in the Northeast squaring off under the lights.

Jeffrey W. Messer '80 was recently honored with the Slippery Rock University's council of trustees recently approved a naming resolution to honor the SRU baseball head coach.

The council approved to name the playing field at Jack Critchfield Park as "Messer Field" in recognition of pledged philanthropic support of the SRU baseball team by alumni and friends to honor Messer. The field and stadium collectively is now named "Messer Field at Jack Critchfield Park."

Entering his 41st season as head coach at SRU, Messer has guided The Rock baseball team to remarkable success, as he is ranked ninth in NCAA Division II with 1,154 career wins. Alumni from the baseball team have embarked on a $100,000 fundraising campaign in support of the Messer Field Naming project that will support the program and its student athletes.
